Wouldn't you prefer Ubisoft only made AC II, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six and GRAW, rather than all their other games on top of that, as they would be able to devote more resources to those main games. I know that this does not really apply to this case, it is more of a general point, and a way of me putting off my homework |

See, this line of thinking has always bothered me. "More access to everyone" means just put it on any (and in some cases every) system and call it a day. But what about the console itself? I'd rather see consoles be taken advantage of then to just have everything put on every system just for "more access". To me, the access is there already. If you can't get the system a game is on, then you can't play the game, it's just that simple. It's also another reason why I think we see so much praise for PS3 exclusives, in terms of tech, but not as much for the Xbox 360. Is it the 360's fault, absolutely not. Problem is, people aren't building new engines for the console. They just depend on the UE3 and put it on the 360 where it's "cheaper to develop", and then the console can't show it's real potential. BUT THEN........... when you look at games like Alan Wake, Forza 3, Splinter Cell: Conviction and the like, you see the 360 has potential to shock the masses from a technical standpoint. That's when I start scratching my head. Would I rather just have a moderately better looking/performing Assassin's Creed 2 on the 360, or a full-fledged, well thoughtout/developed project like Alan Wake in my hands, and the answer becomes clear. Exclusives will continue to shape the market IMO, though there will be multiplats that contrinbute as well (MW2, Assassin's Creed 2, Batman Arkham Asylum). But taking away excclusives from the industry has not helped it much IMO, it's just given developers a reason to say: "ah well, put it on multiple systems, we'll profit that way". Sure, making money back on your product is always a plus. But I think with that train of thought should also come with the idea that taking your time on a project and making it the best it can psossibly be, while taking advantage of the work the manufacturers put into their specific product, should be at the forefront.
Ok, sorry for the rant it's just something I've thought about a lot, and it's one of the reaons why I think this gen, as with future gens, may never eclipse gens like the 16 or 32-Bits because it no longer seems like innovation is at the forefront, but just making sure your pocket is fat. Again, just my opinion. |
I see your point, but in this generation the two HD consoles are so close in sales, and budgets are so high, that a developer needs a damn good reason for making an exclusive. You can blame this on increased competition and especially on the soaring budgets for making a game.
Games are not like movies where you make money on the cinema, then on DVD/Blu-ray and then on TV. Most of the time, you have a very small one-time chance of making a profit (before people start trading their used copies), and you better be ready to make the most of it immediately.

Well, I can't concern myself, as the consumer, with whether or not the game profits, but if the game is worth my money and keeps me entertained. Innovating just happens to be my main desire when picking up a new game, particularly a new IP, which this is. It's also another reason the game won't be seen as such, as it's currently dubbed a "Gears Clone" which Tecmo themselves, not the observers, are to blame for that. I'd just rather developers work harder on projects. Nintendo has done this for generation after generation, and even when they were getting mauled by Sony in marketshare, they were still making more money than them. Their ideas of innovation have kept them in that posistion, and the Wii is solid proof of such. |
best quote of the tread... if i am gonna spend my 65 bucks (10 bucks more then last gen almost one hundred freaking dollars!!!!!) on a game it better be fucking awesome.... most games this gen are not but there are some gems.
i cant believe a poster is willing to accept underpar games so the greedy company can make MORE money out of us.... we are stupid consumers and companies will keep on rapping us because we will still buy crap.

There hasn't been a proper Splinter Cell since 2005

Who said I was speaking specifically about graphics? Gameplay can still affected by the multiplatting of any game. Just because you can make a similar game on another console doesn't mean the gameplay won't be affected. Techwise, exclusive games will always be ahead, and that's for obvious reasons. |
There are very few games that would be or have been impacted by multiplatting (Heavy Rain, Ninja Gaiden 2 and Bayonetta come to mind). I especially don't see how this should affect Quantum. It was never pushing the PS3 technically in a way that isn't just as doable on the 360.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 has been fitted to the PS3's capabilities, but it's actually less impressive in terms of tech than Ninja Gaiden 2, despite also being hailed as the better game.
Bayonetta was built to greatly utilize the 360, and resulted in a crappy PS3 port, but if it hadn't been built in that way, instead focusing on being multiplat friendly in graphics, the PS3 version could have been much better without sacrificing quality in gameplay. Or they could have gone for the Ninja Gaiden solution, and rebuilt the game for the PS3, to make sure it would come into its own right.
Heavy Rain is a different beast, because it is so heavily dependant on the unified storage of a single blu-ray disc, something that cannot be replicated on the 360. It would not have been what it is today if Sony had not decided to fund the game though, ensuring exclusivity in the process.
Finally, no. Exclusives are not always ahead. Which is more techically impressive, inFamous or Assassin's Creed 2? Modern Warfare 2 or Killzone 2? Both choices have something in common, but they are striving for different things in terms of technology. And is the technologically superior game the best one, not to mention the more innovative one? And does that have anything to do with said technology?
seriously since the beginning of this generation both consoles have been losing exclusives. We need to look to first party titles for exclusives since third party isn't willing to take a financial loss with only one platform.

That would have been my answer.
I'll add I look at it from more of a PC background - as a result I don't really like the concept of exclusives.
Yes, they mean titles tuned to perfection (well, sometimes) for that HW, with titles like Uncharted 2 and Gears, but it also means witholding access to the broader community - in the end an exclusive is there to try and get you to have that particular console, and for no real other business reason.
I see a console like a Toaster. The fact it says Sony on the side or MS or Nintendo is irrelivent to me. In fact, I'd prefer if they all had same spec and titles like DVD players and competed on additional features, etc. Different specs, etc. is a pain - either you limit yourself to a single strand of titles, or you have to buy multiple damn pieces of otherwise useless electronics to get access to the whole catalogue. To me it's like having to buy Panasonic to watch Warner movies on my TV and a Samsung to watch Fox movies.
From the look of it, in this case this title wasn't going to be an Uncharted 2 - it's on Unreal tech I gather, which works better on the 360 anyway, and I think what is very likely going to be an average title has just gone from being an average title only available to PS3 owners to an average title available to PS3/360 owners, which I actually see as better for the end consumer.
If the title is fairly average then it's definately going to be better for Tecmo, as they're going to need every sale they can get in that case.
I will say I do enjoy what I see as a proper exclusive, such as Gears or Uncharted for the reason's you give - but with specs near enough identical, I see no reason for the majority of titles not to be multiplatform.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

The thing is, most companies are not making money during this gen. They make a lot of money on a few blockbusters but then blow it all on other games which don't make profits.
You can bet that if all games cost less than $50, a lot of studios would not exist today.

God no. Splinter cell isnt out but i didnt like any of those games. I did enjoy Sonic Unleashed, Ninja Blade and Silent Hill tho. Variety is key. Some people actually have tastes in gaming and dont just play what metacritic tells them to.
