Missed the point. There was no 0000 AD. It started with 0001 AD. This means the current century didn't really start until 2001, which means the current decade doesn't end till 2010.

So why were all those people celebrating the turn of the millenium December 31 1999? I know what you mean, but this is the way it usually works. When talking decades, the 80's is 1980-1989, the 90's is 1990-1999 etc.

@ Xen

1 game per series.

People celebrated the millenium on January 1st, 2000 because they are idiots. Whether the masses beleive it or not does not make it true.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_zero#Third_millennium

The millenium began in 2001, the decade does not end until 2010. Professional media shouldn't make this mistake, but sadly they do.

Or you could just say bullshit to the years revolving around religion and use a standard method of following time, which is that when you reset back to zero it becomes the new time period.

When it's 00:01 (24h clock) or 12:01am do you still think it is yesterday just because it isn't 1 o'clock yet?

Just because there wasn't a year 0 according to religion, doesn't mean there was not a year before year 1.... which means it is a perfectly valid decade ending at the end of year 9.

-----

Actually come to think of it, with recording years, there is no setting back, it is a continuous count upwards, thus the definition use of a Decade is just whichever is easiest to understand and use, that being the 40s, 50s, 60s etc.
(crossed out definition because a decade is any period of 10 years you like)

Galaxy is a 3D platformer, so it's not from the same series.

2D Mario doesn't have to change much from its original concept, because it was already so close to perfection with SMB3 and SMW. But since when is gaming excellence a reason to leave out a game from a best games list? There is no valid excuse to not put a New Super Mario Bros. game on this list and it's an embarassing mistake.

I guess it really depends on their definition of one series....

You're reading my second statement wrong, I'm just pointing out what they might be thinking by not include 2D Mario (again assumingg 2D & 3D counts as one series).

If the article were treating both game as from the same series then then I feel that Galaxy should have been the pick because it was both good AND innovative rather than just being Good as with NSMB. Although to be honest, I would have given it to Mario 64.

Their definition is wrong then. Gamers think that 2D and 3D Mario are different games.

Sorry, for misreading that part of your post.

Sorry again, but I think your choice is terrible. Putting a game from 1996 into a list of the best games of this decade is even more wrong than just leaving out 2D Mario.

@Slimebeast: Once again, I have to say that I am sorry. I am glad that you aren't in charge for making such a list.

lol? I doubt you have played much Morrowind or Oblivion. U shuld give them a proper chance and u'd be convinced they're the game of the decade, with Fallout 3 not much behind.

I admit I wouldn't be able to make a complete and fair list though, no.

Two things:

1. Thanks to this thread, I'm buying Valkyria Chronicles TODAY.

2. The decade debate. Can we at least agree that it has been just about 10 years since January 1, 2000 and not worry about the beginning of the calendar? In that context, it's a decade. Period.

SotC is the best game of the decade? That's funny.

Funny cause it's true!

I'm surprised no one's noticed yet, but there isn't a single Halo game on the list.

Yeah, I actually noticed.  I would have thought that they would have at least included Halo: Combat Evolved.  I guess not :(.

Valkyria Chronicles in the Top 10 is really questionable. It's basically saying he can't find one game each year that's better than Valkyria Chronicles and Valkyria Chronicles is the best game released in 2008.

I'm surprised to see Mother 3 on it. Now I need to find a way to play it.

No Eternal Darkness on the list is disappointing.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

The list is extremely Japanese centric. There are some massive omissions from that list that I won't even bother to mention as any experienced gamer can see them. Of course since the majority of members on this website have a niche taste in games it will be praised but I disagree strongly with the list as it doesn't cover equally a wide enough spectrum of gaming.

It covers an extremely wide spectrum of gaming, and this is written by an American website.

I would personally have fit Combat Evolved and the original Gears in there somewhere, but looking at the games on that list, it would be difficult to decide which ones to take out. They are all, without a doubt, excellent games.

The whole list is shocking

No MGS4?

No Halo?

GTA revolutionized a genre, and so low? San Andreas lower then Left 4 Dead is shocking!

Only one game from each series could make the cut - I suppose they just liked MGS3 more than MGS4.

MGS3 is on the list. Many preferred it to MGS4. Especially Subsistence.

Halo is a fantastic game, yes, but look at that list, and tell me what it should replace.

Yes, San Andreas is a bit low, but being one of the THIRTY best games of the last ten years is quite an achievement.
