i doubt it i meen hes cloud and he has a huge sword hes an unmistakable icon take away his sword and people recognise his iconic hair same with sephiroth for that matter. Lightning will just be lost among the sea of cgi blondes. but none of that means anything as far as the game as it will be awesome.

Lightning has hax mode though (i.e her glowing in a blue electic-like light and become stronger whenever she snaps her fingers). That is enough to aleast put her in the Top 5 most popular FF characers.

none of the final fantasy's have anythign to do with another (unless same number spinoff thingy's)
