He died by hanging himself. He stood on a block of ice to do it and when it melted he was suffocated by the rope around his neck.

As for dtewi's...I read The Hobbit years ago, and I cannot remember the riddle. So, a box with golden treasure, which cannot be opened without being destroyed....
I'll think about it.
