ps2 is still alive, not the big monster it once was but its still alive and the fanbase is still growing to this day. maybe next year it will finally be put to rest since sony has a 10 year life cycle rule on each of its systems. ps3 is nowhere near the ps2 but i don't think it has reached its full potential yet, maybe in the next couple years ps3 sales will peak, and i'm betting that the ps3 will still be around until 2012-2013 when the 8th generation is probably going to be underway, and the ps3 will become a cheap alternative again....(maybe $149)....ps4 is probably gonna be out in 2012, with a price tag of $399. =P

All I am saying is that Sony needs to drop the PS2 before Microsoft makes a move or PS3 has no chance.

the PS1 was produced until 2006. Sony produced the PS1 until the PS3 released. The PS2 is even more succesful and will be even longer around. I bet Sony will still produce the PS2 in 2012-2013.

And if they lower the price even more to 69 Dollars it will get a push again. The PS2 is not a threat for the PS3. Nobody on this Planet would buy a PS2 if he wanted to buy a PS3 unless he cant afford the PS3 so the PS2 is only here for expanding the market for Sony. I bet that a price of 69 Dollar would give the PS2 a decent boost.

It's still selling, I always see a good section of PS2 games at stores like best buy. Didn't they sell the NES in japan up until the late 90's?

My mate just picked up a PS2 for his son (xmas present).

He is not on the breadline. He just thought it was a good deal (taking cost of games into account). He is really "anti-console" for my kids.

He never would have bought a PS3. If the PS2 wasn't available he would not have bought ANY console at all.
