Forums - Sales Discussion - Valve: Left 4 Dead 2 sells over 2 million retails copies in two weeks.

It doesn't include Steam sales.

That's rather a lot, especially without Steam sales. Have Valve ever released Steam sales numbers? They're either ridiculously high (likely for a Valve game) and Valve want to keep it as quiet as possible so the competition doesn't catch on or ridiculously low, that releasing numbers would be embarrasing.

It's a lot. And it's over a million on X360, now I know it sold 320-400k the second week on X360. Very good sales, especially when you think about that it was released a week after MW2.

If it will have "sequel legs", it might not reach the final sales of the first game.

If it will sell that strong for a long time, great.

2 million as in the 360 version only or is this the combined sales of both the pc and 360 versions at retail?

That's not half bad actually and certainly more than I expected! But I do wonder what kind of legs it'll have, if any.

@Alterego

"sequel legs?" seriously? Anymore sequels tend to dramatically outshine their counterparts.. (at least part 2's do). MW2 > MW, AC2 > AC, UC2 > UC, KZ2 > KZ, etc... Sure this isn't always the case, but when a game outsells the original by 2x so quickly, well... obviously it's legs will be just fine in comparison.

MW2? AC2? Outshine their counterparts? Please, none of these even outsold their predecessor yet! If they outshine anything, it was their predecessors' hype.

What about Gears of war 2 outselling GoW 1, THREE TIMES, in the first week,  and now, launches aligned, it is only 20% ahead.

Or what about Wii Fit Plus outselling Wii Fit, more than TWO TIMES, up until now? Do you expect it to reach 45 million in less than two years?

What about GTA IV, the previous "fastest selling game ever" (before MW2), that is now struggling to outsell even San Andreas?

Every game does well in the first weeks, due to having a bunch of fans who are waiting to buy it on the first week.

Some of them, like Killzone 2, turn out to be much better and keep selling, others like GOW manage to duplicate their predecessor's success, and others fail to live up to the expectations.

These two weeks will not tell us if L4D2 belongs to either group.

So PC would be at what? 1m+ something 360, and if its not including Steam, PC would be at what numbers? I can't see 1m retail PC purchases from brick and mortar stores when steam's around, dosen't make sense? Not when its a Valve game / Steam game.

Sonds undertracked!
