Forums - Gaming - Starcraft 2 at Dreamhack winter 2009 Impressions

Hell, it's about time I get to play SC2.

Being swedish, and being into PC gaming, it is only natural for me to attent Dreamhack every once in a while, and guess what I found there?

Blizzard had a booth where Starcraft 2 was playble. I played it, and it rocked, it absolutely obliterates WC3, and will probably stand up to the original when all is said and done.

Since I'm a kind soul, I feel that it's my duty to enlighten people about what is going to be the best game release since the original Starcraft or possibly ever, so if you have any questions about the gameplay, I will answer them.

Here is a link to a TL thread that I made. You can find most of the things that I found out here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=106510

Thank you :D:D:D

Starcraft 2 can't release soon enough, so I don't know if I would have survived if I hadn't won one.

I tried Terran in campaign and in one multiplayer game, and I tried Zerg in skirmish to check out their tech. Aotherwise, I just played Protoss multiplayer since I'm a Protoss player and my friends played as the other races.

Does the game feel comfortable to experienced Starcraft players or are the races so different from their SC version that it's like starting from scratch?

Can't wait for this. Should sell at least aswell as the original, but may do far better if Blizzard can attract some of the wow casual crowd.

There are a few differences that you will notice while you play, but once you begin, and see that Command Center/Nexus/hatchery and the 5 workers next to it, you instantly feel familiar.

Many buildings are the same, and the tech trees look somewhat like the original SC. The biggest difference is the mechanics and the new units. You can do all sorts of new cool stuff in SC2 like sniping buildings with void rays and walking cliffs with reapers. It has the same fast-paced-heavy-on-skill gameplay, but with a different feel. Everthing is much smoother, and the interface makes it easier to play (But not to win against skilled players!!!) If you go into the multiplayer with a Brood War mindset, and a Brood War build, you are likely to lose, but being good at SC will definately help you in SC2 especially if you used to play creative in SC1. Now that there are no real established build orders, creativity is greatly rewarded.

To an experienced SC player, it feels like the game kinda spoils you. You start playing and you're like "I can hotkey all my barracks in 1 hotkey?" "My workers will workersplit automatically?" It feels really comfortoble, and you will have a harder time transitioning from SC2 to SCBW than you will have transitioning to SCBW from SC2.
