There are a few differences that you will notice while you play, but once you begin, and see that Command Center/Nexus/hatchery and the 5 workers next to it, you instantly feel familiar.
Many buildings are the same, and the tech trees look somewhat like the original SC. The biggest difference is the mechanics and the new units. You can do all sorts of new cool stuff in SC2 like sniping buildings with void rays and walking cliffs with reapers. It has the same fast-paced-heavy-on-skill gameplay, but with a different feel. Everthing is much smoother, and the interface makes it easier to play (But not to win against skilled players!!!) If you go into the multiplayer with a Brood War mindset, and a Brood War build, you are likely to lose, but being good at SC will definately help you in SC2 especially if you used to play creative in SC1. Now that there are no real established build orders, creativity is greatly rewarded.
To an experienced SC player, it feels like the game kinda spoils you. You start playing and you're like "I can hotkey all my barracks in 1 hotkey?" "My workers will workersplit automatically?" It feels really comfortoble, and you will have a harder time transitioning from SC2 to SCBW than you will have transitioning to SCBW from SC2.
I LOVE ICELAND!
