Forums - Gaming - What is Halo Reach and why does it matter?

An RTS and an expansion were supposed to outsell Halo 3?

.........Really?

Really now?

Richard, maybe it's time to stop and think a little before we make a new thread.

Its Halo, Bungie's last Halo project(supposedly), a new engine, and did I mention its a brand new Halo??!! It will sell Halo 3 numbers or better.

My understanding is that ODST was only an expansion for Halo 3 (which costed the full $60) and not a full fledged "Halo 4".

And Halo Wars was a completely separate RTS game.

The reason people think reach will do so well is its basically Halo 4 and not an expansion. I don't think it will do Halo 3 numbers but it will certainly do well.

I don't see this doing 10 million. Period. EVERYONE bought Halo 3. Everyone has to try it. But not everyone who bought halo 3 liked it. The fans are always going to buy a halo game. But Halo fans don't number in the 10 millions. A halo fan would also have bought ODST and it will at least do those sales, even more because it was only an expansion. But I don't see it doing substantionally better then ODST's final numbers.

That being said. I expect it to be much better then Halo 3. But I expect less people to care.

Really? I would think it could pull off at least 8-9mill sales WW.

Everyone didnt buy Halo 3.   but yeah, maybe everyone that bought it didnt like it... but then a hell of a lot more then 10 million have bought it or played it.  Used, rentals...

reach will be hugerererer  10m plus will happen.

True. But a lot (read: most) series sell more copies with their first release in a generation then the sequals that follow. For instance MGS 2 sold better then MGS3, and yet MGS4 still performed better then MGS3 also. Also, when Halo 3 released, it was THE FPS and the biggest 360 exclusive. While it is still THE 360 exclusive series, it's been replaced by MW2 as the most popular FPS. Now I'm not saying that Reach will lose a huge amount of sales because of this, but it should obviously effect it negatively in some way. Being the biggest 360 exclusive isn't nearly as important anymore, exspecially after the release of 3. In addition, it's not a numbered entry which regardless of quality might affect it negatively, exspecially after some unhappy buyers of Wars and ODST. Some people might be waiting for a full fledged number entry after those two titles. This game simply isn't as hyped as Halo 3 was. I for one bought Halo 3 and won't be buying Reach. Not new anyway. I also know quite a few people who feel the same. I'm not saying that me and a group of friends mean anything in the grand scheme of things. But I'm sure we are only a small sample of a relatively big group of people who feel the same way and it will have some kind of outcome on the sales. The final thing going agaisnt Reach, and possibly one of the biggest is that the Halo series is becoming oversaturated. When 3 released, gamers had been waiting a couple of years building up hype for the next game in the seires. Reach will have been the third halo game released in the three years following Halo 3. Look at a lot of games with such frequent releases. They gradually drop in sales.

I understand your reasoning and there is some truth to it but it will be 3 years since the last major Halo entry and the 360 will have over double the userbase since H3's release. I think the target should be H3's numbers and a lot will depend on how huge MS goes with the marketing of the game... I think it's safe to say they'll break the bank to release Bungie's Halo swan song. It WILL be tough to break H3's numbers, much less smash them, though.

Halo saturation could have an effect. It will be interesting to see.

Or check out my new webcomic: http://selfcentent.com/

I think Microsoft knows how to market Halo. It will hit Halo 3 numbers trust me.

I have seen a bunch of rumors, including the game being an entire planet at war and having a number of players in combat at levels never seen before.

That seems.... unholy.

So used to 4 player co-op due to that being the amount of controller ports.

Will not stand for 5 player!

Nah i don't care... i just find it funny how 4 is currently expected because of there being 4 ports... even when co-op is online only.

What I am commenting about here is that people are having it as a lock for being a monster title that is set to dwarf Halo 3, without there being any info on it, or what they have done to improve.  The post wasn't set to end up looking at ODST or Halo Wars as the subject.  However, may I remind you that people here were predicting that Halo Wars would outsell Killzone 2, BECAUSE IT WAS HALO (had Halo on the box).  I never said that either title should outsell Halo 3.  I was asking what exactly Halo Reach is (details) and why it would matter.

As far as thinking about this, the Halo Reach hype has been nagging me, and I want to learn more about it.  If it does just what Halo 3 is doing, and doesn't bring more, except a minor upgrade, I don't feel compelled to get it.  And, if it is merely a minior upgrade, despite maybe it having a new graphics engine, I do see it very likely not selling as much as Halo 3 did.
