I can't believe I just read that MS should be scared because of the black friday sales. There were 75k more PS3 sold than Xbox360... Oh no Xbox360 is doomed! (Remember there is still a 9 million gap in the US)

I think it is impressive for a console in its fifth year to sell 325k consoles @ black friday. Besides that, they won on the software front. Assassins Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2 all on the X360 were the big winners.

But anyway, Sony has still GT5 to make its debut for this gen. This and God of War III are the last big IPs Sony has for this gen.

MS will release Natal and advertise the hell out of it. I say we might see a $200 or $250 Elite with Natal this time next year. (I still hope that Alan Wake will be a great success, but thats just me :D)

This gen is basically:

Wii Owns! But that's boring so we check MS vs Sony:

Xbox 360 rules America
Xbox 360 rules UK / scandinavia / Australia

PS3 rules Japan
PS3 rules continental Europe

Just by looking at these markets it is easy to say that the difference in sales won't be huge at all. They will end up more or less with the same amount of consoles. Maybe a 5 million difference (like 55 vs 60 million), but there is no publisher / developer that can afford to drop a 50 million userbase just for the fuck of it.

You conveniently missed the point. The Xbox 360 is $100 cheaper than the PS3, yet was outsold by it, in it's biggest territory, by 100,000 units or more according to the early leak.

Unless Microsoft drops the $199 Arcade down by $100 next year, or unless Natal is a huge success, they have something to consider worrying about. Let's step out of preferences for a second and think logically here for a moment.

Okay, you are probably right. The Xbox 360 is doomed.

Well to the early leak it might be less than 100k, like 75 or less.

Straigth from the article:

"PS3 sold nearly 400,000 units during the week"
"Around 325,000 Xbox 360s were sold"

So a 70k - 75k difference @ black friday... two months after the price cut and the redesign / relaunch of the PS3. I

There is no reason for MS to be worried about. The sales of the Xbox360 are very decent for a console in its fifth year. There is no chance in hell that the PS3 will catch up to the Xbox 360 in NA. Yeah there is a $50 / $100 price difference, so what? The Xbox 360 will always be cheaper than the PS3. This has been the same situation since this gen started. The point is that MS makes money with the cheaper console and Sony loses money with the more expensive one.

Next year, after the more than likley price cut and after the release of Natal, Sony is forced to make a very hard choice again. Should they cut the price again (and continue to make losses) or should they try not to lose more than $250 million every 3 months (that was their BEST result for the PS3 I think) for the very first time.

Actually I think MS has Sony at the balls.

But all this is not interesting for us, the gamers. Both consoles will see major 3rd party support for the rest of the generation.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Sony is at microcraps throat. They cant afford to cut the pice of the box

Oh good, I'm glad to see a third consecutive year of "PS3 will pass 360 next year" posts. These never get old.

Does it really matter? MS has put a hurt on Sony this generation (though not to the bloody flogging Big N has given everyone). Or really, more accurately, Sony has put a hurt on themselves with a $300 console in its fourth holiday season.

Next year, MS will drop the 360 price, sales will surge, and Sony will counter sometime down the road. If (and it's a big "if") the PS3 passes the 360 in overall sales, it will be so late in the generation that no one outside of fanboy number freaks will give a damn.

The only thing we've really learned this generation is:

1. Well-implemented innovation wins out over everything
2. Launching a console at $400+ is a very, very bad idea

So... Sony is bleeding money, MS is doing alright, yet Microsoft is the one who can't afford to cut the price.

Gotcha.

Sony pulled a "Paradigm Shift" on Microsoft, I guess they hoped to affect the Wii as well, but as it turns out it was the 360 that had the closest relationship with the PlayStation business at this point.

Back when Nintendo did it, the 360 also came off slightly unaffected. The market is once again flipped, and Microsoft seems to be the new party under the wave. You can expect Sony to pull ahead of MS if not this year then next.

What matters really is whether Sony can be profitable. If they can't, then it doesn't matter whether they beat the Wii in sales and have hundreds of exclusives - they won't do a new Playstation.

hahaha

people still believe in that

They'll do one more, announced in 2011-2012, but if they keep losing money like they've been doing, the company itself may not be around by the time the gen after that comes around

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Soooo you expect the PS3 to outsell the 360 by over 6 million in 2010.

You realize how difficult that is, right? Teh maths don't agree with your statement.

In the past 12 months, the 360 has sold ~11m consoles. In the past 12 months, the PS3 has sold ~11.5m consoles. Yet you expect that to go to something like 11m (360) versus 17.5m (PS3) in the next 12 months, completely ignoring a potential price drop by Microsoft in the next calendar year.

Do some of you actually look at the numbers before making these predictions?

I'm pretty sure Sony learned their lesson with the PS3. Expect the PS4 to be a radically different machine... In a good way. No obscene $600 price tag, no confused marketing plans, and a more direct attack at the gaming market. I think they'll be okay.

True, I don't see any division of a company making huge losses and keeping doing it for more than 5 years. If the PS3 doesnt become profitable in the next 2 years, then Sony will have no choice but to close their gaming division. This is only basic logic.

That news post has been updated. This is an edit from the PS3 portion.

Edit - with more data coming in, it looks like PS3 could actually be as high as 450,000 for the week once all is said and done.

So it may end up being 125k more, not 75k.
