70% of Wii's "blue ocean" had a PS2. What were people buying on that?

DVDs.  70% of PS2 owners claimed they used the system primarily as a DVD player.

Oops.  Dangit I forgot to ignore you!

So why are they buying Wiis en masse?  It doesn't even play DVDs...

They're not.  Over half of PS2 owners supposedly don't even own a next-gen console yet.  No I don't have a link on hand.  You should be able to google it easily though.

Actually, 70% of the current US Wii market (15.4m) isn't too far off from 50% of the total US PS2 market (21.7m).  And if over 50% of PS2 owners don't have a next gen console yet, the PS360 must be largely a new audience (converted PC gamers?), given NPD also said multiconsole households are an extreme minority this gen (less than 20% iirc, based on data last year).

Okay guys... you "win". Sorry for the lame backing out, but I don't feel I can offer anything more to further the discussion. If you don't understand what I've posted, then... that's that. I'll have to think of a way to restate my thoughts, to get them across more clearly.

Oh no, I understand perfectly what you meant, but i think you're confusing "early adopters" with "people who buy games". I don't contest the point that techies will go for the HD systems (assuming they buy a console at all, natch), but that does not translate into sustained game sales.

To clarify: are you suggesting that people who buy these sorts of games buy them because they are on high-tech systems, and are thus themselves more high-tech?

EDIT: Someone with some time to mine data, tell us how many units it took for EA to make $137M revenue on the PS3 this past quarter, and how many units is took EA to make $137M revenue on the Wii this quarter.  Also, tell us how many products (i.e. dev budgets) those units were spread across.

I'll do it.  What are the specific dates for EA's last quarter?

I'm not sure how useful VGC data will be for this though.  Publishers make their money when they sell the games to retailers, not when retailers sell the games to consumers.

EDIT: You need last quarter for PS3 and this quarter for Wii?  Ok, I still need the dates though.

PC - Borderlands 2 (2012)
PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)

In Q2 2010, EA made GAAP Total Revenue $142m on Wii and PS3 each. PS3 had 4 new launches, while Wii had 6 new launches.

In the last year, EA made 23 new PS3 titles, and 25 new Wii titles. Over the course of that year, they made $877m on PS3 and $777m on Wii.

Now if you look at the Wii list for the last year - http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?&results=50&name=&console=Wii&keyword=&publisher=105&genre=&order=Release&boxart=Both&showdeleted=&region=All&alphasort= - pretty much all of it is trash with a few exceptions and I'm sure most of it cost very little to make.

The PS3 list looks like so - http://vgchartz.com/games/index.php?name=&keyword=&console=PS3&region=All&developer=&publisher=105&genre=&boxart=Both&results=50&order=Release - which is definitely the superior game list and probably cost a lot more to make.

Now which one made more profit, is really up in the air, but EA may have made some statements recently, I can't remember.

EDIT: all information was found on their investors relation page.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Unfortunately, EA uses deferred earnings/revenue, so there's literally no way to tell if the products actually released in any particular quarter were profitable or not from the financials.  Basically, you'll need to take EA's word on it.
