Forums - Gaming - Square Enix: Consoles set for extinction

@reaver_x

the video game industry already dislike gamestop to begin with, publisher wise. Because the majority of gamestop's profit comes from used games and video game publishers really don't see a profit from the way gamestop is selling used games.

i personally don't like gamestop either, just because you trade in game A and get $10 but they go behind your back and sell game A for $40. you just got screwed because they are making profit off your game and selling it to someone else.

Sony said physical copy are going to be here for a long time. Majority of costumers like to actually go to stores and hold onto what they want to buy. If anything Square will be long gone before home consoles. With Sony being the first to bring a digital-download-only handheld console, everybody will see it as an example of how digital download affect the consumer market. And so far its not that great.

I've been wondering about the chances of a console-as-we-know-them market crash three to five years from now. Glad to see at least someone on the industry sharing my feelings.

that's why i see the PSP Go as an beta PSP rather than an actual SKU because they want to see how consumers will fair with digital distribution on video games and to my knowledge its not fairing well right now.

“In ten years’ time a lot of what we call ‘console games’ won’t exist,” he said.

Ten years is way too soon for a prediction like this. Many gamers can't even easily download games from DD systems like Steam, much less stream games from servers. In 10 years, a majority of gamers will be able to download games, but universal streaming is farther away than that.

eh.... don't release Final Fantasy as DLC please, im not going to wait another 5 years for the download to finish.

That will be nothing compared to the 20 year wait between the game's announcement and its release.

I lol'ed so hard. Good one genome!

Exactly why Sony didnt discontinue the PSP-3000 model.  Smart move Sony.

i look at the PSP revisions or SKU's like i do the iPod changes throughout the years. I consider PSP-1000 as the first generation PSP, PSP-2000 the second generation PSP, PSP-3000 the third generation PSP and the PSP Go as a beta for the soon to be released PSP-4000 which will be the fourth generation PSP.

the PSP Go wasn't a dumb move per se. like i said its a beta model for sony to see if the market is ready and they priced it high just for the hardcore crowd to purchase it so sony can then get feedback through sales figures and such. i believe that the PSP Go is a smart move, cheap to make and sony is getting profit from the digital distribution service on PSN for PSP games anyway.

I truly hope we keep things on physical formats. Going to all digital distribution worries me because not only will I never own the game, bring it a friend's house, sell it, etc... but I doubt these companies would even lower their asking price.

I feel it will end up as a "Pay more, get less" scenario.

If they do this and games like Final Fantasy release for $35 however, that's a bit different, but everyone with an idea of how this has been going so far knows full well the games will release at $50-60, just as they do now.

Only difference will be that this time you don't really "own" what you paid for.
