Forums - Gaming - Modern Warfare 2 to be pulled off shelves in Australia

Luckily, all that ever happens in that regard in the US is grandstanding Congressional hearings and the passage of unenforceable, unconstitutional laws.

My sympathies go out to my fellow gamers in Australia. The question is how to get someone to realize that these are not "children's toys"?

The stupid thing is the guy who is trying to get the game's MA15+ rating overturned is the same guy who is effectively blocking the introduction of an 18+ rating for videogames. So rather than being "for the sake of the kids" as it is claimed, it's one man effectively exercising the power to censor game content which should be freely available to adults in this country.

I'm not even that interested in getting the game but it makes me so mad.

Has Australia similar problems with violence in Videogames like germany ? Do you have bad propaganda against videogames too ? If yes I hope that the other Countrys stay strong and this wont be a world wide trend.

Not at all.  We just have this one douche bag who seems to appeal to a very small but vocal minority and thinks he has the right to influence the gaming habits of grown adults.  I honestly don't know anyone who supports his stance.

One person ? How can he have such a power ? In Germany its a big part of politicans plus the Media (on the other side they promote these games) and ofcourse a couple of million conservative folk. In Bavaria they even want to make a law so making violent video games is a crime the same goes for having those games. They say Videogames are as bad as Child Pornography. They are nuts in my eyes they just give the fault to videogames so they dont have to admit that the society has problems. Germany has the second most school massacres in the world and it has the incident with the most dead (even some policemen). But this has nothing to do with Videogames. Other countrys like France or Spain dont have such problems.

I honestly don't even understand the politics behind it, just what I have read online, perhaps one of other Aussies might be able to explain it better.

Basically this guy is the Attorney General of South Australia (state) and he has effectively shelved a political discussion and public consultation on the 18+ debate because changes to this particular legislation effectively requires unanimous support among the Attorney Generals of the different states.

From my understanding for Australia to get a R18 rating all of its provinces has to pass the law. Every province passed the R18 rating except the one this jerk off is in charge of. So he is effectively holding this issue hostage.

So he doesn't want people under 18 to play violent games, but he doesn't want an R18+ rating for games either?

*slow claps*

Fuckwit.

Simply put, in Australia, to get the law changed (to bring in an R rating for games) requires all States' Attorney General's to sign off on the deal. 3 have, 2 are willing to discuss, 1 refuses outright. That man is Michael Atkinson from South Australia who is so anti-gaming that its really quite nauseous to hear him talk.

Senate elections are next year. Here's hoping we get rid of the pr*ck.

Nothing like a front-bencher in a safe district for the ALP.

Sounds like there needs to be a little bit of a political controversy to get him out of office (I was going to say firestorm -- but then remembered that probably is not a good word choice where Australia is concerned).

The $64 (USD) question ($70 AUD) is why is he so against an 18+ game-rating?

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Ugh fascists. Censorship is just silly when it comes to expression. Only things in the world you should censor is stupid people so maybe the politicians themselves should be censored haha. To the fellow Aussies, hope you get to play the game and experience it.

I'd go for ignorance, but that's just a guess.

Australia, how gamers hate thee.
