Yes but... how is one going to defend themselves from the cop?
The only thing I can think of is, "That's not really the cop! He's lying!" There's also the crazy cop, but I'm not sure if those go in normal vanilla games in the first place.

Well, I'm against a super quick bandwagon. I wanna let people get in here and see this before we lynch WoW. Also I wanna let him read the thread and tell us if he thinks anything of anything.
For the record, I believe zexen and I further believe (even more strongly) that there are no millers. So I'll be voting WoW before too long.

No, I'm not.
Still, I was wondering when something like this would happen in a game I'm playing in. There's no way the mafia can kill me at night if the Doctor protects me so their best bet is to sacrifice one of themselves to try for a mislynch. In a large game like this, we don't know how many Cops there are so even if one roleclaims, he can't prove zexen is lying. It's pretty gutsy, I'll give you that.
Still, I'm vanilla townsfolk just as I hinted with that first ice cream post but without a real cop with an innocent investigation showing I'm innocent, I can't prove it.
If a real cop out there investigated me, please speak up. Everyone, please don't let the mafia's plan to kill me work. Vote zexen and you'll see tomorrow that he's indeed Mafia pretending to be a Cop.

But someone remind me. Isn't zexen the one who hates follow-the-cop? Or am I mixing people up, or was he a bad guy in that game?

I knew this would happen, and I knew this would be exactly what you'd say.
I'll just say that if I was mafia, they'd know better than to sacrifice me. I'm a pretty decent player, it doesn't make sense to get me lynched in day 3 (if I was mafia, after I get you killed everyone would lynch me) when there's more and less useful mafia to "sacrifice" as you perfectly said. As a cop, I knew perfectly that I'd investigate you first. Because you as a town are our biggest asset, but as mafia, you're our biggest threat.
I just ask everyone to lynch a mafia, and to trust this cop. You'll be rewarded tomorrow with our biggest threat gone
