We'll have to take the "wait and see" approach, I'm afraid. I still believe in Halo.
@Neos: You name the bet.
I think the chance is that they will perform close to each other. I definitely don't see a situation where either Halo 3 or SSBB will far outsell the other. That said, I think Halo 3 edges out. Software attach rates are higher on the 360, and Halo 3 is far more uncontested in being the "king" of the 360 than SSBB is on the Wii.

That just made me believe in Brawl even more, I don't even think Halo 3 will beat Halo 2.

Brawl looks to be the best 2d platformer since NSMBs and look how well that game sold. Plus, it comes with a free fighting game or something.
Let's face it, Brawl looks to be the best fighting game ever made. I don't except a better fighting game until the next Smash Bros comes out. It has a ton of fighters, the best music ever in a fighting game, great graphics, tons of control options, and more extras than maybe any game ever made. It also has a larger collection of famous characters than any two other games combined. What's not to like?
Remember when Nintendo lowered the cost of the last Smash Bros and kept selling it? Brawl could have ok sales for years. It looks to be the biggest game of 2008, just like SMG looks to be the biggest game of 2007, Wii Sports was the biggest game of 2006, and Resident Evil was the biggest game of 2005. Will Nintendo have the biggest game of 2009? Only time will tell :)
currently playing: Desktop Tower Defense (PC), Puzzle Quest (DS), Trauma Center New Blood (Wii), Guitar Hero III (Wii), Ghost Squad (Wii), Actraiser (SNES), Donkey Kong County (SNES), The Legend of Zelda (NES), Kirby's Adventure (NES)
will play next: Paper Mario (N64), Golden Axe II (Sega), NiGHTS (Wii)

I already prophesied that if brawl had online it would outsell Halo WW, and I'm sticking by my prophesy. Expect brawl to outsell Halo in the long run.
Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!
Here's the thing. If Nintendo decides to do a multi-million marketing blitz in the few weeks before, then surpassing Halo 3 is likely, especially if they have a premiere at least as showy as Halo 3's.
I would love to see Nintendo sponsor a couple block parties to celebrate the launch of the game.
On that note, I would also love to see Take Two have a huge block party for GTA IV, with Lazlo being the MC, and celebrities who did voice acting, like Ray Liotta and Sam L Jackson.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Halo 3 will pass Halo 2 in its first 6 months. Holidays haven't even hit yet.
It's nice to be bold, but I'll stick with an obvious trend.
Halo might have reached its peak with Halo 2, so let's say the total lifetime sales of Halo 3 end up at about 8.50 million for a total userbase gain of 220k.
In order for Brawl to beat that, it would have to increase to possibly 8.6 million, or a total userbase increase of 2 million.
The Halo series has always had great legs in America. Now, Melee and Halo 1 came out at approximately the same time, and Melee beat it by about 150k lifetime, whereas Halo 2, with online capabilities, beat Melee by 1.76 million.
Brawl might have had the chance had it launched at Christmas, but because it launches in 08, its chances to have a strong launch and catch up are now a bit low, especially since many high profiles titles are launching in early 2008.
I think the keyword is Europe, 360 sells much at the same level with Xbox, but Wii sells a lot better GC. If i recall, Melee sales were 5M+ in the US, so it leaves less than 2 million for the rest of the world and Brawl seems to be pretty hyped around here. But, Halo 3 will have legs, unless 360 stops selling.
Anyway, i believe that Brawl eventually sells better than Halo 3.
