Forums - Microsoft - News, Xbox 360 The Truth about Xbox Live Bannings (long read)

I understand where Garnett is coming from. Let us say you bought a bunch of stuff from the marketplace and you want to watch a movie but your ISP went down for maintenance or whatever, you are not allowed to use any of your movies.

Say I buy a ton of movies and I moved, but need to wait a week or so to have my ISP come and set it up at my new place, once again I have no access to what I purchased.

Having to be connected to view what you own is ridiculous.

I am pretty sure if I buy a movie off PSN I can view it at any time, whether I am connected or not.

So that means that I'll get banned for repairing my Xbox myself?

I got the RROD a year ago and fixed it by replacing the X-clamps that hold the heatsink together with the motherboard..that, and also replaced the cheap thermal compound that comes from factory with a quality thermal ceramic compound, also I made the stock fans run at a constant 12v, plus I modded the case by cutting out the back vents for better air flow output and on top of the case above the heatsink (horizontally) I cut out a 4 inch circle and added a 8mm fan that blows fresh air into the console that also runs at constant 12v ..

So, it won't be fair if my console gets banned just because I didn't send it to Microsoft for repair instead.

I don't see how MS would know that you had it fixed by a 3rd party source, but that does make me wonder something.

If you send it to MS and they see that the seal has been broken and repairs have been done in the past, provided that you eventually decided to send it to them, would they send you back a banned console?

I think there is far more to this story then we all know...

@ Garnett, I don't get it...I play stuff of Zune Marketplace on my zune offline...why would it be different for my 360? Are you sur...I'll have to try when I get home.

This is the part that caught my attention from the OP:

I’m afraid it gets worse. Piracy isn’t the only thing that can get an Xbox 360 banned from Xbox Live. If you have any repairs or cosmetic modifications done to your console by anyone other than Microsoft, you run the risk of getting banned if they find out about it.

It means your are force to send it to Microsoft for repair ...imo that's BS.

And no,  if your seal of warranty is broken they (Microsft) wont send you a banned console back instead they will charge you for repair fees.

You're not forced to send it to Microsoft because if you get it done by a 3rd party source there is really no way what so ever of them finding out.

As for the last sentence in your post. What I was asking is that if MS sees that your seal is broken and that repair work was done on your 360 by someone other than them, would they send you back a banned console?

The article seems to suggest that they would.

I would hope that they wouldn't do something like that though. I remember changing the case on my PS2 and installing a Crystal Chip in it. I completely forgot about the chip and sent my PS2 into Sony for repairs.

They sent back my PS2 in the custom case but removed the chip, which was understandable. Luckily though for me they were dumb and the chip was sent back along with my console.

If Microsoft noticed the broken seal and repairs were done to it for RROD or whatever other than Microsoft, they won't send you a banned console. but, they will charge you to repair the console back the way it has to be by factory standards ..  so no, they will not send you a banned console for a broken seal.

Unless the kind of repair done to it it's a mod to play pirated games then Microsoft will ban it, dismiss it , reject it..

Rumour has it the XBox Live console bannings is a conspiracy by Microsoft in a desperate attempt to increase XBox 360 console sales. Millions of XBox 360s were banned worldwide forcing gamers to buy new XBox 360 consoles.

I'm sure its more complicated then that. Microsoft is specifically looking for people with modified hard drives that has potential to store games.

So far there has been no one that got banned that can prove that they have not modified their console in some way.

So i'm sure you wont get banned but you're warranty might have been void since you fixed it yourself.
