Mario has been around for some time and with the release of the New Super Mario Bros. Wii, we thought we’d take a look at the best power-ups Mario has come across in the Mushroom Kingdom.

We start it off with a power-up that has been around as long as the Super Mushroom. This flower allowed Mario to shoot fire and was powerful enough to bring down even bosses.

Not only could Mario fly with this, but could also descent slower and damage enemies while coming down for a ground pound. Pro users could fly the length of the map if they were skilled enough.

Putting this cap on, Mario would transform into a solid metal substance allowing him to walk underwater in complete invulnerability. Short and rare, this is a fan favorite if not only for the music that plays while equipped.

Growing Mario to the entire size of the DS Lite screen, this power-up gave Mario the ability to crush anything in his path including green pipes!

This power-up allows Mario to fly across an entire level, essentially skipping that level. Miyamoto has stated that the new Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is supposed to be a substitute for the P-Wing in that it lets you skip a level and it considered cheap.

This suit is special because it actually combines 4 of Mario’s most popular power-ups into one. The suits it uses are as follows:
Frog suit - ability to swim faster/easier
Mini Mushroom - Can travel across water
Ice Flower - Can throw ice balls
Blue Koopa Shell - Uses a similar “shell dash” that can break bricks/enemies

This little baby makes Mario invincible for a short period of time. Not only that, but it also gives Mario a speed boost and is considered one of the most powerful items Mario can obtain.

Even though the Raccoon suit gets the most love from Super Mario Bros. 3, the Tanooki suit was much more user-friendly. Not only could this suit allow to you fly, but it also turned Mario into a statue that was invulnerable to attacks. When equipping the Statue in mid-air, one could crush the enemies underneath. This would become the ground stomp.

The most basic just happens to be one of the most important. This power-up was in every Mario and not only grew Mario by double, but allowed him to be hit once without dying. This item is so universal that Mario is always shown in this state by default on every Mario boxart. Talk about a popular power-up.

Not only is this one of the rarest power-ups in a Mario game, but it was one of the most powerful. The hammers thrown were so powerful that it destroyed every enemy in the game including Dry Bones, Boos, and even Bowser. For an added bonus, you could duck and shield yourself from enemy attacks such as fireballs. With a skilled enough player, one could essentially beat the entire game with just this suit.
