No, Sony shouldn't and doesn't have to sit out next gen. This gen they made a bunch of mistakes with the PS3....pretty much all the mistakes you can. But that doesn't mean one generation of mistakes will cause the end of their console life cycle. Plus, a lot of their problems came from internal mismanagement (see Ken and Kaz). That's being sorted out, as the entire structure of Sony has been re-arranged thanks to CEO Howard Stringer. Sony is really changing, and by next gen, they might have a completely new type of machine then the last 3 we've seen from them.
The company that should sit out next gen is Microsoft. Their companies focus, marketing structure and plans aren't built with a gaming console in mind. And currently, they don't even seem to be focusing on the future of gaming at all, more focused on trying to keep their company #1 in software development and trying to 'annex' google with Bing and IT technologies within the next 5 years. And frankly, like everything else, the heads of Microsoft seem to have a 'we blame everyone else' type of attitide towards thinking aboutthe future. Whether its the current head of XBOX IS or Steve Ballmer himself, Microsofts answer to the future always seems to be 'they copy us, we're doing everything right, the customer just didn't like our product, we're working on something bigger and better, we've already got something else better....' Aka, an angry excuse.
It will be interesting to see if they even do anything new with their third XBOX console rather than a graphical upgrade. They certainly don't seem to be putting any R&D into it. Aside from Natal.

Piracy is an even bigger problem on the DS and its the most profitable gaming device this gen. PSPs biggest problem is it focused on trying to be a movie player, 'app' machine, location generatior, tea maker, etc. Anything but being primarily a gaming machine. And the only device which has succeeded in this field (in the long run) is the iphone. Even then the iphone isn't selling for its games primarily. After a while, people just understood that the PSP wasn't going to have the amount and quality of games of the DS, and made the switch.
