don't expect next generation before 2012
If this thread is serious, the logic is so flawed as to be broken.
If this thread is a joke, it's not funny.
when the next ps comes out the ps3 will be raking in money. give bc with services and games with next ps, interoperability between psp and ps3 next ps, and they will turn a profit

In clear : delay the PS4 by 2-3 years to DISRUPT the classical "console generation" and by releasing a REALLY improved PS4 with superior hardware/technology/innovation that will avoid direct competition AND allow a not so high release price ... |
Except that they will be facing two entrenched competitors which in a retail space where competitors may have been already been able to get their machine as cheap as Sony new one. If they wait to long they miss the development cycles that will start that generation of games and we see the same thing we saw with the PS3 early on only far worse.
It's about cutting your losses and trying to evolve your company towards something new. Even if best you can hope for is Apple lite with better games(and they'd better get out there before that last statement isn't true anymore)
I dont think they can risk a console skip.
Every gen so far has seen the first to launch sell more consoles than they can make in the first year.
Graphics are a system seller, they shouldnt be IMHO, but they are. The PS3 graphics are pretty much on a par with the 360.
Can they realistically keep tabs on the new machines which will be capable of 1080p at 60 fps with full AA and effects in real 3d.
Well maybe I think this gen has shown that at 1080p the graphics are not so much different to 720p which lets face it is this gens defacto standard.
However if MS are first to market expect
Full Backwards compatibility as they will not switch from a winning formula with Power PC and Ati
Inbulit motion control via Natal or someother device.
A resurgence of HD DVD but in a slightly different form. (A killer for piracy that one)
This has a bonus of allowing Devs to release 360 games and enhanced graphics nex gen games on the same disc.
HDD in all versions of machine.
Put simply the new machine will no matter what the differences in reality give the impression that SONY is selling a tired machine.
Add to this the general feel good factor of a population coming out of a WW recession and I reckon the call of revenue will be to much for SONY to resist.

Does that even matter as that's approximately a year at most before their next system launches? So it'll sell the least it's ever sold yearly while it's profitable. Hooray PS3! |
we aint gonna see next gen consoles for alittle while, even microsoft are trying to hold off alittle
Joelcool7 had a similar thread.
Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!
Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

I don't remember the 360 having shortages.
The Wii and DS selling like hotcakes show that other appeals than graphics can sell your product.
HD DVD wont stop piracy. That HD Dvd player will read DVDs and hackers will to the rest. I have seen PS3 games on torrent sites(don't know how they are playing them though)
This is why I want Sony to fight for the portable sector and not the home market. They can profitably fight and if it works it's good reward. On the home console front I don't see how they can stop Nintendo and M$. especially if M$ plans on releasing early again.
if M$ is gonna do with the next XB they will put off R&D till they get confirmation on sony's next console and rush slap up some stuf and throw it in a really nice box. if thats the case i think sony should start R&D now, IMO the next console generation will probably be given to whoever is there first.
