If Nintendo gets 4+ years in lead time over the others on each new interface technology that actually pushes hardware (e.g. HD doesn't count, motion control does) then that's a lot of time in which you can be profitable with no effective competition. This trend is actually good for Nintendo. The danger would be if MS/Sony came out with something that Nintendo hadn't thought of but successful on the level of the Wiimote, first.

I honestly don't see that happening from either company, as they've never done so before. Sony originally took their lead by shelling out cash (loss on hardware / advertising budget), international presence, different advertising (focus on teens and up), and most importantly, better relations with third parties.
After seeing what Nintendo is capable of (the DS and Wii), though, I imagine it won't take them as long as 4 years to copy next time.
