Natal doesn’t worry us, says Miyamoto

Shigeru Miyamoto has brushed off the threat to Wii from Project Natal and PS3’s motion control system – claiming he is confident that Nintendo will once again discover ‘something unique’ for its next console.

Speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine in its special 50th edition, Miyamoto said that Microsoft and Sony's Wii-influenced motion control innovations risked making the industry less interesting to consumers.

When asked if Nintendo was worried by its rivals’ new control systems, he said: "We don't look to the future in one direction only.

"When you say that one element of our uniqueness might have been lost, you don't really have to be concerned about that, because Nintendo always tries to find something new. I hope you are looking forward to our challenge to discover this new uniqueness."

When asked if Wii had now lost its unique selling point, Miyamoto replied: "Well, I should say that it could be taken as a compliment if others are following suit, by saying Nintendo was right in choosing a certain direction. But if you ask me if that is going to be good for the entire business, I really don't know."

"If everyone else is going to do exactly the same thing, unfortunately in this entertainment business that means less uniqueness, and uniqueness is what Nintendo has tried to realise."

The 50th anniversary edition of Official Nintendo Magazine is in shops today.

In terms of "threats"....I DOUBT Wii is threatened as it has established a brand of being a motion consoe....PS360 haven't & its too late for them too establish that brand

Could they be doing a controller that is only controlled by the mind?! that could be costly and dangerous though.

He is right about the uniqness going away if all 3 had motion devices.

If Nintendo gets 4+ years in lead time over the others on each new interface technology that actually pushes hardware (e.g. HD doesn't count, motion control does) then that's a lot of time in which you can be profitable with no effective competition. This trend is actually good for Nintendo. The danger would be if MS/Sony came out with something that Nintendo hadn't thought of but successful on the level of the Wiimote, first.

I'm actually talking about could happen in the year between 2020 - 2025, but as of now they could be doing something that's ont notch higher than motion controllers, mind controlling is many years in the future.

He probably is. However if they succeed, Nintendo would be playing catch-up to them. It's not in the realm of the impossible.

The situation where Nintendo is driving the progress is the one Nintendo wants.
