Forums - Sony - PSP Go: Digital Distribution Killer?

Steam is ok because there are alternatives to steam, most games on steam can be obtained another way

Digital only will fail, make it an option and people will be ok with it

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

A company would have to be insane to make a sudden retail -> DD only transition. That's obviously not gonna happen.

It has to be a gradual process, as happened (and is happening) with music and movies.

^Sony tried to a degree with the GO

They didn't discontinue the normal PSP, so it was not a sudden transition to DD. It's just part of an attempt to do a smooth transition.

There are alternatives to PSP DD also. It's just the device that is DD only. That doesn't explain why the Go fails where MP3 players succeed.

The problem that console/handheld DLC has is that they don't allow for competition. That is the difference between Steam and PSN. Steam is one of countless avenues on the internet to get games through DD. If it was only Steam, then PC DD wouldn't be nearly as successful as it is now. When Sony realizes that they need to get Amazon.com, Gamestop.com, and even new upstart companies involved, that's when this might take off.

I think the real issue though is getting this while avoiding the piracy problem that is associated with an open digital market.

^This is it does explain why Go failed, as Go was DD only, the normal PSP is still selling because of the option.

Why do MP3 players succeed, because most people don't buy music, for every MP3 that sells on Itunes, you can bet there are probably hundreds or thousands of illegal downloads

Interesting view, but I don't think they have to allow an open online market to make a successful DD system.

They just have to price games competitively, which should be easy to do since they don't have to pay retailer's fees to distribute online. That alone should kick start DD adoption. This also (partly) takes care of the concern that DD games are not possible to resell.

Frankly I think even in Steam, many games are overpriced. For example right now I can buy L4D2 on Steam for 50 €, or for £24 from Amazon UK. Obviously I'm not gonna buy it from Steam.

Indeed NJ5, Apple by no means endorses an open system, and the app store is doing very well for its self

yes Bluray Discs smell awesome!
people hate digital cause games cost money, admit it every phone out there is digital (iphone, nokias n-gage windows mobile etc)
and even psp piracy was "digital" with isos and such.
