There are alternatives to PSP DD also. It's just the device that is DD only. That doesn't explain why the Go fails where MP3 players succeed.
The problem that console/handheld DLC has is that they don't allow for competition. That is the difference between Steam and PSN. Steam is one of countless avenues on the internet to get games through DD. If it was only Steam, then PC DD wouldn't be nearly as successful as it is now. When Sony realizes that they need to get Amazon.com, Gamestop.com, and even new upstart companies involved, that's when this might take off.
I think the real issue though is getting this while avoiding the piracy problem that is associated with an open digital market.
