Forums - Nintendo - NIS comments about pricing and JRPGs saturation

Kinda a silly point because all companies ass for "royalties" (or better put licensing) to develop on their platform. Complaining about it is really a moot point as the only way to get around it is to well develop hardware yourself.

They're not saying that royalties overall are bad, just that the platform leader (in this case, Nintendo) tends to get greedy with the royalty rates that they set. Judging by how they phrased it, I'd guess that they think that the PS2 charged too high a royalty rate.

Around the Network

Guys,

I have to agree with noname2200, after reading the article. It's actually a panel discussion where Siliconera is asking " Why is the Western DS JRPG market in Decline?" The Guy from NIS is just a participant and is asked the question and tries to give an explanation. He never pointed to his company as having failed on the DS. He just tried to give suggestions as to why publishers, according to Siliconera, are having trouble making money on the DS and PSP, portable gaming.

I think Siliconera is wrong with their statements. The point to games like Namco's Tales series of games for the DS not being localized as proof of their assumption. They never think that maybe Namco is to blame. They never localized any of their GBA Tales games, Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2, Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3, and Tales of the World: Summoner's Lineage. Heck, it took Nintendo years before the Legendary Starfy made its debut in the West.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba

I love how the conclusion that this is the PS3's fault and it's being blamed on the DS is absolutely hilarious.

Disgaea 3 likely was a huge waste of resources.

Really though I don't think it's anyones fault so much as... there isn't anything NIS can do.

They do one thing well... and a small group wants that... and that's basically all they want, and NIS doesn't have the brand power to branch out.

Disgaea 3 sold the most this generation, though it likely has made the least money this generation of a "Disgaea-like" game.  With the likely exception of Phantom Brave Wii.

It should be noted though that the guy saying this is just a script editor at NIS America.  Which basically means he works at a glorfied translation house.

I under he's just a script editor, but I don't see why people running away with this assumption that the PS3, any platform really, has failed them and they're forced into a corner.

Same market + Higher costs.  Disgaea 3 didn't cost the level of a new Disgaea game... but it still cost way more then any other NIS game.
