If anything, this generation has taught us that software quality is almost irrelevant. This industry works almost on hye and hype alone.

Bull froom.

This generation has simply taught us that software quality is relative. I think you understand the point, too, given the subject of your avatar.

I won't touch a Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 2 or Halo 3 here, but come on; Link's Crossbow Training is over 4m. How can anyone think this as quality software.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, I enjoyed Demon's Souls way more than Oblivion and Tales of Symphonia 2 than FFXII. But that's more about the review system being totally broken nowadays.

I can. Why do you ask?

What makes you think 2009 won't be the peak year for the PS3? Just as you assume Wii sales will fall in 2010 then why won't PS3 sales too?

It's going to be nearly impossible for PS3 to go down YOY next year. Sure it's been performing great since the price cut but the first 8 months of the year were abbysmal. The first two quarters next year will see an enormous YOY increase which even an average performance in the second half will probably not negate. And that's assuming it will have an average second half.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

You assume it will have a massive yoy increase in the first two quarters (also are you talking fiscal or calendar year?), it could see a fall after the Holidays back to where it was before, I thin kthe source was predicting it likely would

I really hate the term "HD twins"
I would find it hard to see people using the term if they owned both Video game consoles this generation.

I think it would be possible for the PS3 to beat the wii on weekly sales near the end of this generation.

The problem is marketing, I hear non gamers talk about the wii, yet they still dont know or care about the PS3.
But Sony is and always has been a gaming company and I am not sure if they are about to "change" in order to attract non gamers anytime soon.

The question is, will all of the wii owners in the world become gamers because of owning the wii.
If and when they do, the PS3 will be there waiting.

ahhh non gamers do know what the ps3 is they just dont give a shit about it

The ps3 out of the 3 had the worst line up in 2007, but it was good. The wii might have had the best line up in 07, but it was very close between it and the 360. As for 2008, the 360 and ps3 were somewhat close, with ps3 edging it, the wii had super smash bros as its AAA ip. Then came 2009 were the wii had not 1 AAA ip other than the potential NSMB and re release of metroid, PS3 almost every sony ip went AAA, and most 3rd party blockbusters went AAA, along with AAA ip that were exclusive to the 360 being ported to the PS3 thi syear, that alone pushes the ps3 ahead of the 360 in quality, but the wii seriously lacked this year.. Next year it has Super mario galaxy 2, and Metroid, and potentially ZELDA, those are 3 huge franchises, and likely AAA ip. At the same time PS3 has GOW3, GT5, and FF XIII, 3 huge franchises as well along with other ip. SPLINTER CELL, HALO, and ALAN WAKE, 3 mega hits from 360.

Clearly next year will be big for all 3. But the past 2 years have been PS3 years in terms of software.

I know this is irrelevant to this topic but I completely agree with ya Leo EXCEPT for the fact that you mention Alan Wake will be a mega hit for the 360. It won't be and if you want 3 mega hits for 360, It's Halo Reach, Splinter Cell and Mass Effect 2.

OP@ I don't think anyone ever predicted the PS3 to outsell the Wii LTD. It just won't happen. EVER!!!

^Well some people did, but that was earlier in the gen, back when people thought that PS3 would still end up the generation leader, back in 2006 and even some in 2007, but I don't think any sane person believes it'll happen at this point.

It's going to take a looong time (at least two years, estimating) before Sony finally passes Microsoft for 2nd place, I think it's pretty premature to start thinking about passing Nintendo.

Ew, this analogy again. How convenient.

I'll pick at this for fun.

Here, take a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums_worldwide

Nintendo games (including the Wii) dominate the all time best sellers, and they get this way by selling over long periods of time. This somewhat mirrors the best selling music albums of all time - take a look. It includes albums from Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Eagles and such.

The albums that sell like the front-loaded games of HD consoles are on the bottom. See Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Madonna.

Eat it! (... tbh, I don't know how those albums sold)

... On topic, not a chance. Consoles in Japan are an entirely different story. Besides, there's no way in hell the PS3 can catch the Wii in that region, either. The fact is, the PS3 is built on older gamers (PS1-PS2 gen), while the Wii is not. I don't see this changing - Sony has yet to show any software that shows us otherwise.

Just enjoy your console, as long as Sony sticks around there's hope (for you) in future gens.

Actually, average Wii owner is older.

A decent amount of kiddies balances out with those who grew up with the NES/SNEs, as well as those who just never got into gaming before. Average Wii owner is 29, I think PS3 was about 22 or so, but can't remember, nor do I have the source

Haha Great Thread answer not a chance!! Lets do some joke math...Wii stops selling completely (0 sales a month) Ps3 sells 1 million a month IT WOULD STILL TAKE 2 AND A HALF YEARS TO CATCH UP! LOL just LOL
