All consoles have Power PC Architekture like the CELL.  The Xbox 360 Xenon is a PowerPC CPU. the Wii  as the IBM broadway its PowerPC too and the GameCube had PowerPC Gekko from IBM. The WII can be emulated already. And the GameCube. The Consoles before used Mips Architekture the Xbox was just a PC with a Console Housing.

You can Emulate EVERYTHING. You just need enough resources. A PS3 Emulator will need a very very strong PC. But it will work. In an emulation you reproduce the Chips completly you can Emulate even the real world if you have a Computer which is powerful enough. 

Ofcourse a PS3 emulator will take a while because it is a strong Hardware. But in 30 Years there are maybe PS3 emulators on MobilePhones

^^ are you joking the emulator for the ps2 has still not been perfected yet, it works on a lot of games i admit, but tstill plenty of room for improvement there
the ps3 would be very hard to emulate even on really powerful hardware, infact i am betting they will never even bother, because by then no-one will be bothered, if they relly want to play on ps3 games that bad they will just use a ps3 (if they are still around by then lol)

Ofourse its hard and the PS2 Emulator is not perfect. If Sony would make such an Emulator it would be perfect its just a question of ressources. But its not impossible to make one he said that the difference of the CPUs is adding to the factor that there will never be a PS3 emulator.

But its not like it wouldnt work. Emulators are ALWAYS flawed. But look at Wii Emulator it works ofcourse its far far away from beeing perfect but it works. And there will be a PS3 Emulator in the next 10-15 years I bet on this. I never said it will be perfect. the PS2 emulator is not that bad its flawed but you can play games on it.

And PS3 emulator can be done the difference of the Cell maybe adding more complexity to a PS3 emulator but its not impossible. I never said it has to be perfect.

The only way it could be done is as an add-in board, that some software might be able to take advantage of. It wouldn't be of use as the primary CPU since as everyone has pointed out already, you can't run Windows or most other PC software on it.

As an add-in card, it could be used as a special purpose co-processor, kind of like the Phys-X physics accelerators, or indeed like any GPUs these days. But it's hard to see exactly what purpose it would serve. As shown by the Folding@Home project, the Cell is half way between the capabilities of a standard CPU, and the GP-GPU type chips. Most of the computers you'd consider adding the Cell card to would already have both a standard CPU and a GP-GPU.

A niche within a niche isn't much of a market.

It depends how far the market develops. I remember running a mega drive emulator for my S60 nokia 6600 in 2004. We can now have Dreamcast quality games on your iphone/touch. And nowwe have Tegra,which is steps ahead. Emulation isnt that hard- there are plenty of talented coders out there.

If the DC could emulate psone(bleemcast) and the 360 can emulate original Xbox games- then I'd say the best PC hardware of 2010 should be able to run PS360 games in emulation.

The desktop x86 architectures will be better than the Cell in pretty much every metric within a few years simply due to the lack of investment in the architecture. There is simply no point to it.

This is a very good idea. It would hurt M$.

I never said it had to be perfect either, but still the complexion in emulation the architecture of the cell alone will definaltely put off a lot of developers from even wanting to do one, if you know what i mean.

as for x86 becoming better than cell processors, only if the cell processor dies and no futher cell procesors are made, if sony decide to keep on improving the Cell processor, this wlll not happen.

sony owns the idea for the cell processor, so it would be possible for them to make more superior versions with other companies if they really wanted to.
