Forums - General - HD-DVD or BluRay?

It was my understanding the new sized disks will play in the cheaper and older players. Either by a simple firmware update, or will just play. Also all of the players should have an ethernet port on them for simple upgrades. So this shouldn't be a problem.

With the PS3 coming with a Blu-Ray drive by default its future as a gaming and movie format is pretty much guaranteed (Sony is also an important movie producer).

Technically Blu-Ray disc provides more data per layer and allows for higher bitrates. Default scratch resistance is also a major long term pro. A dual player would also be an option, these are basically Blu-Ray drives offering HD DVD backwards compatibility like they offer DVD backwards compatibility.

Hmmm...

In the same way that UMD movies have/had a guaranteed future?

...

Time after time, in dual format wars - the format with the superior specification fails. This is all about business, and ultimately - making money.

Sometimes its the pursuit for the superior specification that pushes up prices - and results in it being uncompetitive.

Any many of these "numbers" to the consumer means nothing. Its only a very real, and tangible difference that is noticed. So when there isn't a tangible difference, but there is a tangible price difference... you can guess what happens.

Lets not forget to mention that pressing/manufacturing of BluRay discs is more expensive than HD-DVD discs. Not by a lot - but even 5%-10% is significant.

HD DVD player is available at circuit city (and circuitcity online) for $197.99 with 5 free HD DVDs (standard). If you want to wait for blackfriday, Sears has third generation HD-A3 (with 2 free movies in box "300" and "bourne identity") + 5 free hd dvds for $169.99 if you are willing to line up before 5am. If you like "special edition" DVDs, you will love HD DVD for the extra in movie experience and interactivity. If you don't care, you can go for blu-ray's PS3 if you plan for a gaming console. Or best yet, get both. You get the best of both worlds, as in blu-ray for spiderman & pirates, and everything else for HD DVD. :P

Blu ray is more expensive for the player, but the discs cost the same. and according to http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/ the average price of Blu-ray is cheaper.

Blu Ray Disks are larger. they can fit everything onto one disc, and larger discs are in development. this is an important aspect of Blu-ray, it doesn't matter what size disk you use, your player can play it. not the case on HDDVD where the majority can only take up to a certain size (therefore the consumer released movie disk size will be limited).

Disk size has caused problems already for HD DVD, even at the start of the Format War - HDDVD are already having to release movies+extras on multiple disks, and not enough information for High Definition can be incuded on one disc - for Transformers, they were limited in the quality of sound for the movie - not a really a problem unless you own top of the range audio equipment, but if it's a problem now, imagine what that will be like in 5 years time.... see link: http://www.n4g.com/News-74839.aspx

Finally, sales of discs. The PS3 may not be selling massively for the console industry, but it has MASSIVELY helped the format war. there are 5 million blu ray players out there, all those console gamers now buying blu-ray disks is causing a stir. blu ray sales already outstrip HDDVD sales: http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/

First things first, overall most MSRPs for HD DVDs are cheaper except combo discs.  That's the reason usually you see HD DVDs more expensive.  Warner has released non-combo for a lot of their previously combo only movies so you can actually get a lot of them for under 20 bucks.

Second, I'd say extras on extra disc is alright since it also has web-enabled capability for ALL players to download additional features (gotta love the GPS tracker and additional information for Transformers).  I say it's better than "burned in picture in picture" on a second copy of the same movie on a single disc (Warner's Terminator 3), eg. non-profile 1.1.  I wouldn't like to keep switching between the two identical movies and start all over if I want to turn off the PiP.

Lastly, say for North America.  Yes, 2 million PS3s sold + standalones.  PS3 alone is 5:1 ratio with standalone HD DVD players, yet ratio is only 1.85:1 in terms of copies of movies sold.  Yes, it's not 2:1 anymore, it's 1.85:1 according to Nielson.  So yes, the PS3 has helped, but the momentum is shifting for HD DVD in terms of sales growth, both in software and hardware.

Soon the size of the disk will not matter HD DVD's will have 51g on them. The sound for Transformers got rave reviews on HD DVD.

And the BDA is currently testing 200gb quad-layer BD-roms. Neither matters, because current players weren't built to play these discs.

The current sizes discs available for movies is a 30gb dual-layered HD DVD and a 50gb dual-layered BD-Rom.

The current players for HD DVD will play and use the 51g disks.  The reason I said anything about it, because Blu-ray supporters always talk about the size of the disk matters, even though it is not really so.  But yes they are coming and yes they will be able to play in older players.

Either way, this whole size argument is moot.  It's not going to help the TC decide which format to get.

Bluray has the movies, has the industry support and no matter what Br has the PS3 hddvd has nothing. BR is out selling hddvd in ever region of the world, some as badly as 90% for BR. Hddvd is a pointless format with little support.

The 40gb PS3 is perfect for games and Br movies, at $400 its easily the best value you can find.

Link please?

According to this article: http://www.betanews.com/article/Toshiba_DVD_Forum_Hasnt_Yet_Approved_Final_51_GB_HD_DVD_After_All/1189716943

"The spokesperson then added that it has not yet been determined whether current HD DVD players or recorders will be able to use the new format."

There's no confirmation yet as to whether the 51GB discs will play on existing HD DVD players. They're doing "testing", which is pretty ambiguous. Unless you can point to me that this is CONFIRMED. There has been talk about requiring a hardware upgrade as opposed to a firmware upgrade, so it's possible that all existing HD DVD owners are either screwed, or they will not adopt the 51GB discs.
