Forums - Gaming - john4lakers and LP---ROUND 5 of XBOX360 vs PLAYSTATION 3-----GPU MATCH UP!!

The PS3 has some great number crunching capabilities, but it also has bottlenecks that have thus far limited it from looking that much better than what the 360 does. Theoretically, it should be way up there, but thus far, the PS3 hasn't shown it to be a class beyond in execution, with the 360 version generally being superior to PS3 version in regards to graphics.

Xbox 360 maxed out by Red Faction: Guerrilla :

PSU: What is the primary advantage with the technologies for next-gen? Are there differences between the 360 and PS3 that you found aided you in the game?

Valve: We defintiely feel next-gen technology aided truly in our development process. You know—you have complexer AI, you have more characters to work with, an enhanced ability to work with the animations on a higher scale–all that stuff. The only difference between the 360 and PS3–which both as a collective helped us develop The Orange Box is definitely there. For the 360 version of the game, we can probably say we are using around 93-94% of the console’s power given our current optimization. With the PS3, we can’t exactly say what power cap we reached, since no developer really knows where the boundary is for the PS3. We can tell you that in terms of the whole game together on the PS3, we are not even using the SPU’s and it is purely built on the graphics card and Cell. We’re still optimizing for PS3 more because we can, which can explain the slight delay to you. But no worries, everything is going smoothly to put down any rumors.

360's GPU hasn't Been maxed out im sure of that , but the console all together cant do much more and thats too bad because the 360s GPU is really capable, PS3 still has room to grow.

...I don't know what to say...perhaps you need to watch some more viiideos of this guy. Here's a hint, a console game is pretty much always maxed out. Unless you reeeheealy think the people at Volition and EA have some massive skills and more knowledge of MSFT's console than Microsoft themself, Epic, Bungie, Lionhead, or any 1st/2nd party. But who knows maybe they do.. I mean the pic below looks leagues above Alan Wake right? rite?

i myself Never stated the 360 was maxed out , i posted links of people who said it was or close to being maxed,

I said

"360's GPU hasn't Been maxed out im sure of that , but the console all together cant do much more"

im really trying to say they will always be able to figure a way to do a little more here and there thats obvious , and the PS3 has a little while longer before it starts hitting its limits too, and it also will only be able to upgrade a little here and there until new hardware hits , im all for the 360 Having a massive amount of hidden power where it can do a Halo with better graphics then killzone 2 or U2 and it can have tons of things going on all at once , and im all for the ps3 having tons more to offer . i just think we are expecting way too much.

Although this comparison tries to be unbiased and succeeds in this far more so than ones in the past it fails miserably on some accounts.

They mention the 360 GPU allows for "free" anti-aliasing and that sub-720p games like Halo 3 require more anti-aliasing. They fail to mention Halo 3 does not have anti-aliasing despite the sub-720p resolution.

It's true that at low resolutions the 360 GPU can do relatively cheap anti-aliasing, but it's not really "free" as marketed by Microsoft and evident in high profile XBox 360 exclusives. Anti-aliasing becomes an issue in 720p and higher resolutions due to tiling.

I think in a year or 2 we will finally get to see really unbiased comparisons. I think this comparison is better than most mainly because of Uncharted 2 which finally gets some people to start thinking about things more deeply.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Also for example some developers have started using the SPUs for anti-aliasing.

It also fails to mention the PS3 GPU is more powerful overall, but does highlight the XBox 360 GPU to be more flexible (so taking advantage of this, this can result into porting issues without signifacant game engine redesign).

It rightly so puts emphasis on how the Cell is able to help the GPU. The PS3 GPU was designed to take advantage of the Cell, so can be weaker in certain areas the Cell excells at when properly implemented.

Although it incorrectly restates the "free" anti-aliasing marketing from Microsoft. This video also misrepresents Sony's PS3 marketing.

Before the PS3 launched Sony said the PS3 would provide Blu-Ray movies in 1080p and games "up to 1080p", which is of course correct, they didn't claim all PS3 games would be rendering in 1080p though.

But however when everything is said and done, I think for most types of PS3 games 1080p will be the most optimal rendering resolution for heavily optimised PS3 games.

Actually, hes talking about the RAM, and ND maxed out the PS3 with UC2, So your not getting better graphics than that..

Oh wait whats Heavy Rain, does it have better graphics than UC2? Yes...

and

" For the 360 version of the game, we can probably say we are using around 93-94% of the console’s power given our current optimization."

Nice try, neither console is maxed out.

I also noticed the XBox 360 won the first round with regard to comparing the two controllers.

I find that pretty amazing, my girlfriend had major issues with the XBox 360 controller and not at all with the PS3 controller. Although I with my big hands can manage both controllers, I prefer the PS3 controller a lot (despite never owning a PS2, which was similar).

I find it funny so many people lacking a background in ergonomics (unlike me) somehow believe Microsoft got this right. But of course, the controller of the original XBox was more sucky.

Wow, actually Naughty Dog stated the exact opposite. How did you come up with something like that?

Im just stating what they said MikeB, And what exactly is the opposite?
