I actually thought of this before, yay me!

I like it in 3d Mario games more. When you jump into quicksand, you lose a life. If you jump into lava, you lose health. In both situations you get punished. If you could get out of the quicksand, it would be too easy in my opinion, and loosing health because of quicksand wouldn't make sense.

In 2D Mario games quicksand is dangerous because you can't escape in many directions if the enemy comes, but in a 3D Mario game you have too many directions to escape.



And then there's that poisonous water in NSMBW. I was a fool to try to swim in it.



I never thought of that before.

Crazy...

A couple of things:
A few of you mentioned that my reasoning was not true for Super Mario Sunshine. We all know Sunshine does not exist, as evident from Nintendo saying that Super Mario Galaxy was Mario 64 successor with no mention to Sunshine. They like to pretend Sunshine does not exist, therefore it does not. (
