Forums - Sales - Sony: 70% sales growth YoY for PS3; receives 17 VGA nominations

No you dont get it . The people which want a classical gaming console would never buy a Wii. In my age there are no people which do have a Wii. The Wii is a good console but it cant satisfy the people which like Xbox360. Thats just impossible they want graphics. They want HD they want better Online they like the games library and prefer that over the Wii library.

Sony would NEVER launch a console at 800. Even if there were no Xbox360 the price would probably be still 399 and there wouldnt be a slim but the sales numbers would be somewhere around the PS2 Level. The people which prefer an Xbox360 want things that the Wii cant deliever.

The Wii crowd is a completly different one compared to the people which own a HD Console. And most of the people dont have 2 consoles they have just one.

The wii cant satisfy the people who have bought an Xbox360. They bought an Xbox for a Reason--> good graphics good online FPS-WRPGS.

The WII opened a new market and maked a lot of Non Gamer play Videogames. Thats why the market is so big right now. 80% of the Wii customer practically dont existed before. The PS2 crowd went to Xbox360 and PS3 and if the Xbox360 wouldnt exist then they would have gone to the PS3 and the PS3s Price would have gone quickly down.

Sony has market Analysts. they are not completly dumb they are used to make losses on the beginning. Everybody did this except 3DO and Nintendo with the WII. But they made losses all the time. And the Price goes faster down if you sell more because the RD and the stable Costs like machines producing facilitys are going down because the higher the product the lesser the percentage of the stable costs. Thats the way it goes. And the Price would be reduced pretty quickly because they would see the success of the WII and would see that they could earn more they would cut the price almost as fast as they did now. the HD markets and the WIi market are different. Thats the Idea behind the whole thing. Nintendo said that before. Ofcourse they have market parts which are the same like the kids between 6-18. So there is competition but most of the markets is not the same. A lot of people are buying Wii which would never buy a PS3 or Xbox360 a lot of people are buying PS3/360 which would never buy a Wii. Thats the same with cars I would never buy a Porsche Cayenne if i want a Carrera. Because they both are totaly different products. They offer different things. Both are in the Car market and both have people which they have to compete for but most of the people wouldnt buy one or the other.

I have the feeling that you suffer under a misconception of the market itself. Would you go in a store and buy a salad if you wanted a steak just because the salad was cheaper ?

If there were no 360 the PS3 would have 57 Mio Sales until now. Because Xbox360 user want HD and FPS good Graphics good Online the Wii is no alternative to the Xbox360. And if the Xbox360 would have never existed then the market would have been devided between Sony and Nintendo and Nintendo would have the slightly smaller piece of the pie.

So PS3 would be the leader and would probably outdo the PS2 sales because Xbox360+PS3> PS2 in a comparable time frame.

^^^ this.

I really don't understand what point unfounded speculation like this is supposed to reinforce but i can speculate too.

The PS3 wouldn't have had the benefit of receiving ports from the 360 which already had an installed base.Developers would have taken one look at a $600+ PS3 and the $250 Wii, factored in the cost of developing games, done the maths and continued to focus their development on the PS2 and Wii, effectively delaying widespread changeover to HD development.

Speculation is fun.

Sorry but no, a $600 console wouldn't sell to most, people would wait for the price to come down, in the mean time Wii would have racked up sales and software support, plain and simple.  People who would want an HD console would wait, until it was cheaper, by then Wii would have the developers and the software, long before PS3 could even build up a decent base.

So why are we getting hypothetical again?

I told netyaroze that the 360 was the reason that the PS3 was seeing so much third party support due to multiplats and the ability to share games across the two systems and that without it, the PS3 base would be too small to support as much third party support, so he started to argue that without the 360, the PS3 would have had all of the 360 owners making it larger than the Wii's, problem with that argument as I pointed out, was that at $600 most people still aren't going to buy the PS3.

Shame that on the multiplayer nominations they don't separate local from online multiplayer, NSMBWii should be on that list or at least on a local multiplayer nomination.

Well yeah that clears things up. There are examples of systems launching at high price's and not being able sell to the mass market like the 3D0 for one.

and then hardware comes into play........ fact remains the wii is one weak ass console, the ps3 sold out at 600 dollars, just low production, developers for the most part are about expanding the industry....... why did the the guys at cryteck make crysis.... technically to run crysis on it's medium specs would require a pc that would cost twice as much as a ps3 at 600. Same for alot of games for pc. You think developers would op for the weaker console because its cheaper. Funny because i have a direct relationship with this seeing I am a game development major, and my professor is a game dev. and our class requires constant work in the industry and I can tell you..... uhhhh no 360 and ps3 for 600, developers would be mking games for ps3.

you don't have a grasp on the industry, what developers are all about, we are into furthering the industry, constently evolving as the time goes on. Gaming will never put itsself on hold because of an expensive console, it never has and it never will. We learn and adapt (except valve). and ask your self as a gamer, do you wan't developers not to push technology and provide experiences never to had? Are you ok with saying in 1 generation? do you think it would help gaming as a medium to stall itself and not move foward? and if you answer yes to any of those questions then sir you are not a gamer and shouldn't be here........

The low production was done because people weren't buying the system in great quantities at $600, so they didn't want to have excess stock.

Developers work with Publsihers who are looking at sales and profits, and if SOny has a small Base and Wii a big base, and no 360 to share ports and multiplats with, then yeah they'd be forecd to make games for the Wii, just because of the fiancial aspect, right now the 360+PS3, is slightly larger than the Wii, so they can justify not developing as much for Wii because multiplats can be spread over a larger combined base.
