I have considered getting a Phenom II X2, which seems to be better than the Athlon II since they have that L3 cache. My board is thankfullly AM3 compatible if I do a BIOS flash, so any Phenom II would work. I've been considering going quad, but at the same time I only have a 500W power supply, which is running a 250W GPU, a 65W CPU, and like 4 fans, 2 hard drives, and a DVD drive. So going to a Phenom II X4 with 125W may be too much I really need to get a volt meter and see how many watts I'm pulling with this system at full load. Maybe I could spare another 60W, maybe not. |
You'll be fine. I doubt your system is pulling more than 300W under load, those TDP figures are worst case. A top-end i7 system running a GTX260 used 227W on techreport.
What about a compromise? Phenom II X3 720, OC to ~3.4GHz again. Few games load the fourth core.
