I'd expect Mario Kart like sales honestly, it's multiplayer focused and probably the most approachable game on Wii. I also think it's highly likely Nintendo will bundle the game next year alongside Wii Sports, further inflating sales.

I don't think it will break the 18-million mark to be honest. I'd bet 11-mill lifetime sales WW. After playing the game hands on it is just too difficult for a casual gamer to enjoy. Lets face it , casual gamers want games they can just pick up and play and NewSuperMarioBros:Wii is not that kind of game. I spent all evenning playing and am only on World3 with over 12 continues. This game is very challenging it might have been easier if I wasn't playing multiplayer but it is still definatly not a game for casuals and non-gamers.

So its not really the most approachable game on the Wii their are far more casual games for the non-gamers, casual gamers to pick up rather then pick up a sidescrolling Mario! The brand name will likely sell NewSuperMarioBros:Wii to the hardcore and some older gamers who grew up playing Mario but thats about it.

Honestly 11 mill is being optamistic chances are it'll level off about 8-9 mill like Galaxy did!

isn't that what Super Guide is for? Helping the casual gamers?

It's a given for NSMB Wii to outsell Galaxy. It would do much better in Japan. Unless you are suggesting it would sell worse in NA and EU, there is no chance for it to level off at Galaxy level.

@haxxiy

1.5 lifetime in Japan for NSMB Wii would be a huge disappointment. Probably same level as Animal Crossing last year.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

why or how would even the most hadcore nintendo/ mario fans want or expect nsmbwii to outsell galaxy?

I think I would agree with you if it wasn't for New Super Mario Bros.

The DS game has sold almost 20 million by now. For me that was totally unexpected. I simply cannot believe that many people would want to play that game. And with that knowledge, coupled with how successful Nintendo's other big titles have been, 20 million looks very plausible.

Super Guide's a bit of a response to the high tuned difficulty, but I also think the difficulty's somewhat overstated.  It really isn't any harder than SMB1 or SMB3.

I think it'll hit Iwata's 10m (shipped) goal by March, beyond that it's hard to say but the social nature of the multiplayer and brand name I think will ensure a longer tail than Galaxy (more like Brawl or Kart).  18m would be more the limit I'd see, unless it gets bundled like I suspect.

I still don't see the reasoning behind the 20 million + lifetime figures, other than people perhaps wanting it to sell that well. Personally, I think its a gross overestimation. Its (the Wii) in a decline, despite Wii Motion + and a price cut, doubly so in Japan where it has plummeted this year so I don't understand why NSMBWii would sell incredibly well and over twice as well as Galaxy.

It's got an emphasized multiplayer mode, it's more approachable/understandable from both a gameplay and marketing perspective, it hits the right nostalgia buttons... Galaxy doesn't make for a good comparison at all honestly.  The reason people are expecting 10+ million is by looking at NSMB and the Mario Karts.

The market overall is in decline, and even it's current decline, Wii's still moving more units weekly than PS2 did comparably.  The industry in general and Wii in particular clearly aren't recession-proof now, but the sky's hardly falling either (except in Japan, you're right there).

The game only has 70k preorders in Japan. It probably won't do much more than Galaxy first there.

NSMB on DS sold 900k in Japan first week.

I know. Do I need to underline the 70k preorders thing? That's only 20k higher than Tales of Graces. I think it'lll do 300-400k first week in Japan and have good legs.

I think if we could get preorder figures for other similar minded Nintendo games (Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, NSMB) that'd probably help sort it out more.  Anyone have them?

I actually expect 10 million + myself (like I posted in the thread earlier) but 20 million? Just seems like a stretch, is all.

SSBB had shortages so that doesn't count (Nintendo had only 30k or so ready for pre-orders).

Retailers pre-ordered 700k SMG copies and it sold 260k first week. Still we have no idea how big actual consumer pre-orders, but that's the best I could find.

EDIT- and a small news about NSMB DS pre-orders and launch that does not bode well for these Wii preorders. For now.
