If you are talking all time then pull a chair this gonna take a long time and would be pointless to list but If it's this gen I would say Wii fit and recently Borderlands (360).

GTA 4. HALO. MW2 were all expected to be huge sellers. So i wouldnt really call them a surprise.
Mass Effect and Bioshock are more surprising to me

No, I'm arguing that the ratio of western sales to sales in Japan relative to other JRPGs on the 360 indicates a higher amount of western appeal, which would be another reason for why it sold so well in the west. This is all a matter of opinions, so it's not like I've ever acted like you're not allowed to have one. You just seem to be hung up on your made up point because you're caught up in your own angst. And it's quite frustrating. I've explained several times how it had a huge advertising campaign in the west that spread a lot of awareness among gamers, and how it didn't have as much eastern appeal as Blue Dragon. Now, if one JRPG sold about 1:1 in America and Japan (respectfully) and another sold about 4:1, I'd be tempted to use that as evidence (along with obvious appeal factors) that it has more western appeal. It a game sells 1 million copies in America and another one sells 100k copies in America, than the one that sells 1 million copies has way more appeal. That's why it sold better. And if that doesn't make sense to you, there's something wrong with the way you think. But please do walk away from the argument. I'm sick of you complaining just because I responded and you chose to make it personal, and I'm sure of hearing about how I'm trying to prove your opinion wrong. As if that's the most freakin' horrible thing in the world. |
Between you two you could have filled up a full page in these forums lol.
Oh and Lost Odyssey isnt a surprise hit. Why because people were saying that it would be the first RPG to cross the million mark. and we are still waiting

Recently? Scribblenauts, Demon's Souls and Borderlands. I thought they'd all bomb honestly.

I'm just surprised at how much better Lost Odyssey did in the West compared to other JRPGs. But now that I took a closer look at the sales, it isn't anything too significant. I take back what I said. I'd have to agree on Borderlands.
Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!
Kojima: Come out with Project S already!
Nintendogs, brain age, COD4, Gears of War, Halo 1, GTA3
Those were huge breakthroughs in my opinion, eaach one had a major influence
I edited cuz i mixed up 2 posts

Would Persona 4 count as well? Considering that it was released when many massively hyped games were coming out, it sold quite well. |
I'd say no. It did worse than Persona 3.
Assassin's Creed.

cooking mama, square (taito) really screwed up on letting that one go, they kept hold of it in the franchises smallest selling market :3
it was odd seeing how much buzz a game like cooking mama got at its first e3, its pretty amazing its been able to be a casual title but keep interest with many gamers at the same time, something seen pretty rarely outside of nintendo titles.
theres a pretty big list of games that werent expected to be big but ended up becoming huge franchises; the sims, sim city. few originally thought grand theft auto would see the resurgance that it did with the move from top down to 3d. sega had pretty low expectations for sonic, viewed it more as a marketing ploy in america (pack in, cartoony).
a hit to me is a proven game brand/franchises, theres even more suprise "hits" if you count one hit titles from this gen (lost planet, nintendogs) but many of these titles will probably die out in 1-2 sequals, it happens every gen.
