I want a 2D mainline Final Fantasy on current hardware.

It would be interresting, and probably incredibly awesome^^

A secondary group in SE is actually creating a DS title called 'Final Fantasy Gaiden' which is actually looking pretty good.  Looks a lot like the early Final Fantasy games, but brought into the modern day.  I'm actually more interested in this game then I have been in any FF game in years, and more interested in it than something like FFIV DS or FFXIII.  It just seems to have that extra bit of 'old school' charm while still focusing on the gameplay.

It looks just like the old Super Nintendo RPGs. Looks interresting, I like that visual style in RPGs.

Newer FF games turn me off a little due to the overworld (The camera is in the enviroments it instead of not having a camera like the 2D games)

Sure it increases immersion, but makes it harder to navigate and makes it feel less like a game. Also, newer JRPGs are so incredibly flashy. All that flashiness in the new JRPGs are just too much.

That's why it would be interresting to see SE go back to say, the FFVI style of 2D just with very high resolution sprites and backgrounds, that are like Muramasa quality or better. To see how FF would have been if it stayed 2D. And considering how cool Muramasa looks, I guess a 2D FF would look incredible as well.

Oh the glory days of FF6 will never come back! Sad :'(

Around the Network

Depends. I think a lot of people are such huge fans of the series and the genre they don't want to consider Western influences "infecting" their pure JRPGs. I wouldn't mind if Square-Enix gave a Western dev the chance to experiment with a spin-off Final Fantasy to see if they could bring any new ideas to the table whilst still retaining the core of what makes Final Fantasy great. Giving the actual numbered iteration to a Western dev would be far too risky and could alienate Japanese fans.

To be honest I feel like JRPGs need a bit more innovation as all the games seem to play more or less the same with similar story. That's actually why I usually enjoy each Final Fantasy as they usually try to bring something new to the table (although not always for the better in the case of FFXII).

Well frankly, I don't know what everyone is even talking about.  If people want to play a 'western' style JRPG, SquareEnix already makes one.  Its called Dragon Quest.  And the series has been focusing on exploration, character interaction, item collection and a Wizardry style battle engine (all Western RPG staples) for over 20 years.
