Forums - Sales - Reggie: Modern Warfare 2 may have trouble maintaining sales while NSMB Wii will sell consistently

mmmm I don't think it can sell even 7m by march.

Mario Kart Wii managed 6.35 million in it's first 15 weeks (Well 15 in PAL/JP and 13 in America)

That was:
1. On a smaller userbase
2. Not launched in the Christmas period
3. Supply constrained in some places

NSMBWii will be launching on double the userbase, during the best weeks of the year for big launches, supply is yet to be determined, but they don't have to pack the wheel in at least.

15 weeks takes us to the 1st of March, and will be 15 weeks in America and PAL regions, but 13 weeks in Japan (so similar to MK:Wii with 1 region 2 weeks later, except this time it's the smallest region later instead of the biggest)

----

I haven't looked in depth at anything, but as a guesstimation, by the 1st of March:
NSMBWii - 8-10 million
MW2(360) - 8-9 million

For Reggie's "prediction" I think it will be a close bet (was it WW or USA only?... WW I think NSMB will just beat 360 version by the end of Jan, but not USA only)

yeah but despite this sounding absurd, MK has this amazing attractiveness, and I would dare say it's even more accessible.

It doesn't sound absurd. I'll bet more people know what racing is (existence of cars), than 2D Mario. I think they'll be about even in sales, though.

Gotta wait for the damn sales...

@hanafuda: I don't think anyone doubts MW2 outselling MW1. However, what if we remove each game's first week? That's pretty much the focus here, "maintaining sales."

mkds will catch up, I've read the daily battle.

Considering we are still talking about early sales in this thread, rather than lifetime sales... you might wish to remember NSMB was released after Mario Kart and managed to outsell it.

So perhaps MKWii will outsell NSMBWii in the long run, but it is not unfeasable for NSMB to catch up first.

Oh Reggie... to the general public yes this is going to end up being true. But you know and I know that anything that has a big first week will have "trouble" maintaining sales... at least percentage wise haha.

Essentially a statement he knows he can say without any repercussion. It would be like saying the same thing about Dragon Quest IX in Japan.

I don't think he is backing out on his statement but simply trying to put more press and more hype for NSMB Wii. I mean I don't think there are too many that disagree that NSMB Wii will sell lots over a long period of time. But I also wouldn't be surprised if Modern Warfare 2 will do the same. I also don't think we should disregard Mario of having a big opener. Most estimates from here and from VGC are putting an American opener of about a million and at least another million first week across the world. That's quite a big opener.

I still don't think New Super Mario Bros Wii will be able to beat out MW2 on 360 but I do think both titles will flourish this holiday season with massive sales (Ps3 version as well) and along with other big titles this will be quite a large software holiday season pushing hardware as it progresses. That I can be sure of.

Less than a week after making a prediction he's already trying to back out of it......

I don't see any backing out, just him saying what we all know to be true, even the blindest HD fan knows that Mario will have far greater legs than MW2

Yes, just like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 64, oh wait...

????is this some kind of joke??? Not sure if I understand your remark???The games you mentioned all sold well...even Sunshine which was on a failed platform...

He's saying that the past few Mario games have not had the legs to compete with the likes of ModernWarFare2 and he's right.  Sure Sunshine sold fairly well for being on the failed platform but what excuse does Galaxy have? On a monthly basis Galaxy and COD4:ModernWarFare are selling similiar quantities.

What makes you so sure that NSMBW will perform better then any of Mario's other home console titles. Don't even bother bringing up NewSuperMarioBros:DS because we all know the DS has double the user base that Wii has. So halve the sales of NewSuperMarioBros and you have a good picture of what to expect from NSMBW. That is about 10-13-million in lifetime sales.

Will NewSuperMarioBros really keep selling after Galaxy2 and the new Zelda come out next year? Nintendo's titles have traditionally had legs but this generation look at their legs compared to other huge system sellers like Halo3 or ModernWarFare1. Those titles are still selling over 30K a week last I heard. That is just as good as Mario:Galaxy if not in some cases better.

Why does everyone think that Nintendo's Wii has such good legs compaired to system sellers on the other platforms?

The DS had a userbase of under 56mil, under the Wii's current userbase, by Nov 24th, 2007. New Super Mario Bros had already managed to sell 11.5mil at this time. NSMB was over 18mil when the DS hit the 100 million mark. NSMB will hit the 20mil mark before 120mil hardware is sold, which is still in reach of the Wii's lifetime sales. These comparisons aren't entirely useful, as MK:Wii and Animal Crossing has shown.

As for the last bold, I don't. I merely think Nintendo's system sellers, or evergreens, have better legs than other games on any platform, simply because it's true. No games have the legs like the big Nintendo games do, seeing as how they dominate the top selling games of all time, and do it without large openings (compared to the other top sellers, like San Andreas).

I believe this has mainly come to attention after the surprise that was MK:Wii. It showed that a core game, not just their Wii Series (Fit, Play, Sports) is capable of selling ridiculous amounts of copies - even more than the DS, probably due to the nature of handheld / consoles (home consoles historically sell lots more games). Since then, they have come out with Wii Sports Resort, which did not disappoint (and will likely blow past 25mil). We merely expect New Super Mario Bros Wii to be the same, as it is a game everyone can enjoy together - kids, girls, adults, elderly, etc.

Notice how nobody here thinks Galaxy 2 or Zelda Wii (likely) is going to sell 10 million copies, or have better legs than MW2? NSMB Wii is simply not in the same league. Nintendo thinks the same, and is setting expectations / advertising accordingly.

How is MW2 supposed to sustain near to 7 million levels? O.o

´this. The statement is rediculous lol.

Check out my game about moles ^

after 7 million sales no one cares if it maintain sales because that is more than anyone needs

The issue isn't that Regie will loose his bet.
The issue is he will loose it by a mile.
MW2 360 will sell more in its first week than NSMBWii will sell till December 31st....( which makes it laughbable that NSMBWii was the game most people wanted on this site for November.)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
