He's saying that the past few Mario games have not had the legs to compete with the likes of ModernWarFare2 and he's right.  Sure Sunshine sold fairly well for being on the failed platform but what excuse does Galaxy have? On a monthly basis Galaxy and COD4:ModernWarFare are selling similiar quantities.

What makes you so sure that NSMBW will perform better then any of Mario's other home console titles. Don't even bother bringing up NewSuperMarioBros:DS because we all know the DS has double the user base that Wii has. So halve the sales of NewSuperMarioBros and you have a good picture of what to expect from NSMBW. That is about 10-13-million in lifetime sales.

Will NewSuperMarioBros really keep selling after Galaxy2 and the new Zelda come out next year? Nintendo's titles have traditionally had legs but this generation look at their legs compared to other huge system sellers like Halo3 or ModernWarFare1. Those titles are still selling over 30K a week last I heard. That is just as good as Mario:Galaxy if not in some cases better.

Why does everyone think that Nintendo's Wii has such good legs compaired to system sellers on the other platforms?

The DS had a userbase of under 56mil, under the Wii's current userbase, by Nov 24th, 2007. New Super Mario Bros had already managed to sell 11.5mil at this time. NSMB was over 18mil when the DS hit the 100 million mark. NSMB will hit the 20mil mark before 120mil hardware is sold, which is still in reach of the Wii's lifetime sales. These comparisons aren't entirely useful, as MK:Wii and Animal Crossing has shown.

As for the last bold, I don't. I merely think Nintendo's system sellers, or evergreens, have better legs than other games on any platform, simply because it's true. No games have the legs like the big Nintendo games do, seeing as how they dominate the top selling games of all time, and do it without large openings (compared to the other top sellers, like San Andreas).

I believe this has mainly come to attention after the surprise that was MK:Wii. It showed that a core game, not just their Wii Series (Fit, Play, Sports) is capable of selling ridiculous amounts of copies - even more than the DS, probably due to the nature of handheld / consoles (home consoles historically sell lots more games). Since then, they have come out with Wii Sports Resort, which did not disappoint (and will likely blow past 25mil). We merely expect New Super Mario Bros Wii to be the same, as it is a game everyone can enjoy together - kids, girls, adults, elderly, etc.

Notice how nobody here thinks Galaxy 2 or Zelda Wii (likely) is going to sell 10 million copies, or have better legs than MW2? NSMB Wii is simply not in the same league. Nintendo thinks the same, and is setting expectations / advertising accordingly.
