Demon's Souls? VC?
Also, FF CC is a high budget JPN 3rd party Wii game. |
Demon's Souls isn't 3rd party. Valkyria Chronicles isn't really niche either (decent budget, big promotion, Sakura Taisen successor).
FFCC is pretty high budget, but it has a host of issues working against and probably would've flopped just as hard regardless of console.

It is third paty. SCEJ did help developing the game though.

It's first party. Sony produced, funded and own the game. It's a Sony game, they just hired FROM to develop it.

No matter how much promotion a game receives, it's doesn't change what kind of game it is.
Valkyria Chronicles, even in your twisted world where it actually had advertising, will always be a niche game due to game itself.

Japanese SRPGs aren't inherently niche. Super Robot Taisen isn't. Arc the Lad wasn't. Sakura Taisen wasn't. Final Fantasy Tactics isn't. And when you get down to it, neither is Valkyria Chronicles.
This isn't NIS, Compile Heart or Idea Factory shovelware we're talking about. It's a SEGA game, with a bigger JP push than anything from the company last year besides the two Yakuza games, from the team behind Sakura Taisen, with an anime tie in and a sequel already in the wings. Too much money, publicity and expertise was put behind Valkyria for it to be "niche" in it's homeland.
