The fact that the Steam peak was similarly-sized (even though the game is dumbed down on the PC) certainly puts some comments about the PC market's size into perspective.

Steam is bigger than Xbox Live. XBL only beat Steam because of the release of MW2, and the fact that most XBL users are concentrated in the americas (which means they're all in the same timezones). Steam is much more global, more evenly split between americas, europe and asia/oceania.

In the lowest hour of Steam, there are still over 900k Steam users logged on.

Also, we are still not counting Impulse, Battle.net, Gamersgate, D2D, etc... and the millions of people that play MMOs every second. And then....

Don't worry, no one is denying many more people are playing on thier PC.

But this is the first generation online play has really been taken seriously on consoles and its a huge success.

And then lets see how many people are actually playing something on Steam vs just having it logged in and in the task bar?  Not many people leave their 360s running idle.

1.2 million people logged on to Steam, a little over 200,000 people playing something.

Halo 3 currently has 116,302 logged on and playing and I am quite certain MW2 has more than that.  So those two games alone have more people playing than on Steam at this point in time.

Steam is a DD portal first and foremost and a gaming portal second.  Live is the oposite.  Battle.net would be the closest comparison probably.  And I could not find any numbers for that.
