Steam is bigger than Xbox Live. XBL only beat Steam because of the release of MW2, and the fact that most XBL users are concentrated in the americas (which means they're all in the same timezones). Steam is much more global, more evenly split between americas, europe and asia/oceania.

In the lowest hour of Steam, there are still over 900k Steam users logged on.

 

Also, we are still not counting Impulse, Battle.net, Gamersgate, D2D, etc... and the millions of people that play MMOs every second. And then....

Don't worry, no one is denying many more people are playing on thier PC.

But this is the first generation online play has really been taken seriously on consoles and its a huge success.
