Forums - Nintendo - Hands on impressions of CoD MWR [requested]

Ok sorry guys we wanted to have the review up when the game dropped but I had to go out and buy the game myself, but we'll have it up ASAP! (sounds strangely familar)

Joking over, the short version is if you played W@W and saw the gripes about the game, Treyarch listened to those gripes, addressed them, and then ported over CoD4 in its entirety and made a better game in every way.

For the long version, right off the bat you'll notice the improved graphics, gun/hand detail blow what W@W did out of the water, and a bit better than The Conduit (especially those ugly hands when you're just wearing the tux). They didn't do much to the lighting engine, its basically the same other than when you're in the light, you'll have a shadow, when you're not you won't and the shadows look better (W@W had shadows even inside buildings in the shade).  Effects are improved, better explosion effects, there's now actual reflections in the game, and dust, snow, and trash effects from the HD titles are in there.

Load times are quicker, the scale is larger, they didn't skimp on the port at all, everything is there, just toned down to run on the Wii and makes for probably the best FPS experience on the Wii.  Multiplayer has every map and every mode, it only lacks the 5 DLC maps that you'll find in the GOTY edition on other systems for the same price.  Multiplayer itself has better stability than W@W and The Conduit (though I dislike the heli in CoD4 and enjoy the dogs a lot more XD)

Controls I have to say are the biggest change from W@W to CoD MWR.  It has many MANY options, you can customize everything from the bounding box to your crosshairs, it basically equals The Conduit on this part.  But do note The Conduit seems a little bit more loose to me no matter how I set up the controls while CoD feels a lot tighter, probably due to the lock on system of The Conduit and the aim assist of CoD.  Also you get every option the PC version of CoD4 has even the lean function (which is controlled by the nunchuck and works well)

As for the negatives, it lacks the 5 DLC maps, it is 30 frames and not 60, it only chugs when something didn't load in (doesn't happen often but enough to mention) and when you're on a large scale map with a lot of action going on.  Basically the whole singleplayer ending *spoiler warning* in the car chase scene you'll notice it's running a bit slower, maybe the 20s range but not enough to mess up the IR aiming as I mowed those guys down left and right, it was very intense.

Honestly thats it, its the best FPS on Wii, only issue is it's 2 years old, missing splitscreen, and they're charging full price.  If you've only got a Wii or love the Wii controls for FPS and like playing it competitively like me, its a must have.

How's the online matchmaking? Easy to play with friends? Limit to a group?

I haven't played with friends much yet since I basically got the game last night and sat through the entire SP playing it in one sitting.  But I did play a couple of matches, I joined up with one person on my friends list, it was a blazing fast connection, played a few rounds, got invited to play another game and got the message while in game and it even alerts you to say you have a game invite, I had to turn it down so I could rank up and get create a class really fast since the stock classes were getting me killed.

One issue I really had was the lack of separating lower levels from higher levels, I was level 1 playing level 22 guys (if there's an option to play with people around your I'd like to know cause I'll note it as well) while I'm good at CoD when I'm limited to guns/perks that suck it's hard to get my kill streaks.

Which one would you recommend more The Conduit or this?

This beats the Conduit hands down. The number of maps alone make this a good buy. Matchmaking is quick and seems faster and more streamlined than W@W. The graphics are nice, and a bump up from the last game. The character models especially took a nice visual bump. All in all its a great game, though it should have been released at a budget price considering its age.

This still irks me about Call of Duty. A leveling system where it doesn't belong and my general hatred of Activision are the only things standing in the way of buying the game right now.

Still, Infinity Ward and Treyarch got enough right between them that I'll probably pick up this game at some point. It really does look like the best online FPS on Wii.

Which meant it was the best when it came out, but that was before. This game now tops it.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
