Forums - Gaming - Will Demon's Souls win RPG of the Year?

I am pretty sure it may come down to Demon's Souls and Dragon Age: Origins.

As it stands we have Demon's Souls at an 89 on Metacritic and and 89.97 on Gamerankings. We have Dragon Age: Origins at 89 (PS3) and 86 (X360) on Metacritic and 89.70 (PS3) and 87.76 (X360) on Gamerankings. Both are at the point where most new reviews may end up bringing the score down, as Dragon Age: Origins dropped from 90 to 89 on PS3 just this week if I am not mistaken.

Anyways, is there any other RPGs I am omitting here? I do not mean handhelds games either, I am strictly speaking about home consoles RPG titles as we all know that one of them will be what these major gaming sites will give the award to.

Is there any big RPG on the horizon between now and January? Of course not FFXIII, it is only releasing in Japan.

I am curious to know what you think. I remember a thread a while back where many were so absolutely sure that Dragon Age: Origins would end up the higher rated game.

Anyways, I personally think Demon's Souls will take it, but who knows. I will be playing Dragon Age: Origins soon!

Demon's Souls will probably get the award from atleast a site or two, but I suspect the majority will go to Dragon Age for the PC version. You said no handhelds but I think a few sites will give the award to Mario and Luigi.

...

I think one the main reasons why Demon's Souls will also take it is because it was so incredibly well received while coming from a development team known for mediocre offerings and was admitted by reviewers as being pretty much written off shortly after it was announced. Dragon Age: Origins on the other hand was anticipated to be a really good game from the get go to the point where it graced the cover of magazines such as GameInformer.

That alone has to go a long way with the voting. It caught many by surprised.

I haven't played Demon's Souls but imo Dragon Age is well deserved.

You have a point, Demon's Souls came outta left field while Dragon Age was actually somewhat dissapointing on consoles since AAA was pretty much expected.  So maybe that'll be enough to give Demon's Souls the edge.

I haven't played DAO, but Demons Souls was unique on all fronts. A truly great game and a throwback to the 'controller throwing' days.

It's my personal RPG GOTY as of now. And I think a few sites will share my opinion.

Demon Souls

I think it's going to come down to Majority of people doing dragon age because of availablity. While demons souls is the better game by a small margin not many get to play it because of the relativly low amount of Prints compared to the multiplatform readily available dragon age.

Personally like i said though i would give it to Demons, but majority rules here which may be a problem.

Exactly. Dragon Age was riding on past developer success with critically acclaimed RPGs such as Mass Effect and Star Wars. Demon's Souls had zip, nada, they were looking at King's Field and their more recent games that scored poorly such as Ninja Blade and Armored Core.

Demon's Souls earned it score solely on how great the game actually is, to the point where it is said that it's use of controls and game style will be a great foundation for future dungeon crawlers. It is truly unique.

Just look at the praise it got for it's unique take on multiplayer. I would love to see more of that style of online gameplay in an action RPG.

@SoulSamurai

That certainly didn't stop Persona from taking home RPG of the Year awards in 2007.

Plus, if we count Asian sales, which VGChartz does not track, Demon's Souls should easily have surpassed the 400k mark already. The game was sold at a large number of import sites such as PlayAsia for almost 5-6 months straight.

The game even failed to meet early demand in Japan and the US. The game oozes quality.

Yeah I agree with the fact that more people will be playing Dragon Age.

I'll wait untill I finish playing both before I decide which one is better though.
