Forums - Nintendo - Pixmania declares Wiimote endangered in 2010

Another high-tech "survey" predicting the downfall of the Wii.  Most of these proclamations turn out ot be way too early/advanced -- basically "bleeding edge" people thinking what should be -- which turns out in many cases to be very different than what actually happens.

The same list includes landline phones and analog TV which are disappearing and gone in the US for all intents and purposes respectively -- but also things like DVD players -- saying Blu Ray will take over.

Personally, I have serious doubts about this.

DVD, Fax machines, Wii-motes: 'endangered technologies'

DVDs, fax machines and Wii-motes are all "endangered technologies" that could disappear from shop shelves by the end of 2010, according to a leading electronics retailer.

By Harry Wallop, Consumer Affairs Editor

The ubiquity of the iPhone and its increasingly popular applications will lead to key gadgets falling from favour, while improvements in technology mean many popular household devices will be consigned to the scrap heap.

Pixmania, the largest electronics retailer in Europe, has compiled a list of the top ten "endangered technologies" that will be lucky to survive by the end of next year.

Fax machines have been under threat for some time, but next year could be the year they finally disappear from shelves because of the boom in smart phones and the arrival of touch screen technology that enables digital signatures.

Smart phones, not least the iPhone, could also spell the end for Sat Navs, now that drivers can download – for far less money than it costs to buy a Sat Nav – road maps to their handsets.

Wii-motes, the hand-held 'wands' that players use to control games on their Nintendo Wii console, could also disappear if Microsoft's Project Natal takes off. This is Microsoft's motion sensing technology that tracks gamer's movements, without the need for the gamer to hold a control stick or wand. The revolutionary technology, designed for the Xbox 360 console, is expected to go on sale towards the end of 2010.

Kieran Alger, the editor of the gadgets website T3.com, said: “We’re always talking about the fast pace of technology but 2009 has truly seen us take huge leaps forward and even greater developments are expected in 2010.

"Things that have been making life easier for a generation are about to be replaced. It’s a shame to see an old classic like the DVD face the threat of extinction, it will be gone, but not forgotten.”

2010’s most endangered technologies:

1. DVD players

2. Fax machine

3. Analogue TV

4. The landline phone

5. Mobile phone charger

6. Wii-mote

7. Sat Navs

8. Dongle

9. The computer mouse

10. Chip and pin credit cards

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

The computer mouse?

What? How the hell? Touch screens?

If land-line phones are going out, how the hell are mobile phone chargers going out? Solar powered cellphones?

lol I was wondering the same thing

wfz - I suspect the author is implying that MS will bring Natal to the PC in 2010, and that it will be so sucessfull that computer mice will no longer be sold.

As for dvd players, they will continue to be sold for years to come, heck if I really wanted I could probably go buy a first hand VCR player. Speaking of which, how can DVD be an old classic? It is an infant compared to the age VCR was when it got replaced

Why is the computer mouse on this? There saying that PC, Wii and 360 are endangered.

Hmp.

wow, what a horrible list.

I don't think they get that holding onto the Wiimote is part of the appeal of the interface.

They can be forgiven, since they're looking at it from a purely technical angle, but we know better. Software will determine if the Wiimote is endangered. Software will determine whether Natal succeeds or fails.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Ridiculous list. Sat navs? A phone won't replace a permanent fixture in cars. The computer mouse? Nobody who works at a computer all day wants to touch their screen. Some like the fax machine are definitely waning, but they will be manufactured for years because of the same corporate infrastructure that is keeping Windows 98 and XP alive.

Honestly.. a computer mouse?

This list is out of touch.

Pixel Art can be fun.
