Forums - General - Capitalism is broken

Capitalism works far far better than socialism. I think no one would make a serious point about pure socialism or communism being better.

However, I believe that neither system can exist solely by itself. A mixed economy is better in my view, perhaps based on Keynesian economics. Capitalism is a self destructive system when it is by itself, and socialism is just bad for so many reasons I can't list them all.

I think a mixed economy that is 80%+ capitalist would be a good idea... However, usually people perceive this view as socialist, which it is not.

...

In short. Yay Capitalism and booooo Socialism.
...

*Sigh* I'm too young for all this.

Holy crap at France. What a horribly socialist minded country to live in.

When you consider their history, is it really that surprising?

what is it with you being so anti-socialist?

It's not anything with me, it's with socialism being bad.

I'll fall on the side of 'What we have isn't free market capitalism'

Isn't spain still run by the socialist party? Hasn't France had some of the most burdensome regulations for business? As far as I know, this is the case. Why then do you think that these figures are a referendum on less capitalism?

As HS and Mafoo have said, the issue lies with how many governments have integrated capitalism into their system. Many want the free market as it provides a good system for increased productivity. However, they want the 'safety' of social programs to make sure certain voter blocs don't get ticked off (corporate or poor blocs)

I wish they would have asked countries in the top 5 for economic freedom how they felt about their system. Many of the countries' polled are pretty low on the Heritage index for economic freedom..

France - #64
Mexico - #49
Brazil - #105
Ukraine - #152

Yeah. Definately some free nations there. Those were the top 4 most dissatisfied nations. Methinks they need more freedom, not less. As others have said, it seems that the pollisters assume what countries have is actually freedom. Why didn't they ask Hong Kong about their economic system?

It's a world poll of over 29,000 people, not a poll of the most Free Market places which would only create a biased result. To get a good aspect of world views you have to poll as many differing views as possible. Look at the Polish views as a good example in this poll, a country which entered the EU a few years ago and has only prospered since, before then it suffered with the fall of communism and struggled on it's own.

And you are using France as an example above? One of the richest most powerful countries in the world with one of the best healthcare systems? Nice choice. What kind of poll would it be if the only results they showed and took were those of people screaming praise for a system that's recently failed us?

Hmm, pie.

lol, Free market Capitalism? It doesn't exist. Not since the government got involved.

Yeah, i read that.

Really what I found shocking was that most people in the Ukraine now think the collapse of the USSR was a bad thing.

I guess because most of the people who didn't want to be part of the USSR were murdered way back when combined with the economic downturn.

I mean really what are we measuring here?  It's not so much what people feel about capitalism but what they feel about it right now. Ask the question 4-5 years earlier and i bet the poll practically flips.

I mean why is Germany at the bottom of the list?  Because it wasn't effected nearly as bad as the other nations polled.  Public opinion will swing back to normalcy with the economy.  Assuming the governments don't overregulate to the point of where it doesn't come back.

Well depending on the nation.  Places like Mexico and Spain will have high disatisfaction because they're countries are in general broken normally.  No offense to Spain, but it's unemployment numbers were insane before the crisis.

It seems pretty natural to me that people would start thinking more about fixing the roof or moving into a new house after the roof has collapsed rather than before. That being said, I'm not quite seeing the link between the impact of the crisis and distaste for capitalism that you claim to be seeing.

Despite Germany not being much effected, a staggering 70% or so of Germans seem to want more regulations. Meanwhile, the countries most content with pure capitalism (as if such a thing has ever existed) are amongst the most effected by the crisis. Pakistan has the shortest yellow + blue bar, despite almost being completely bankrupted by the crisis. The US comes in second, despite unemployment hitting levels not seen in fifty years.

So I'm not seeing a strong correlation between the impact of the crisis and people's opinion of capitalism. There's probably a link in terms of the change in negative opinions on capitalism, but you'd need a similar poll from a few years back to draw conclusions on that.

Oh yeah capitalism is broken, socialism is so much better. Lets just tax the hell out of the rich and give all the money to unmotivated poor people so they can continue to live unproductive lives.

Capitalism is the only economic system that gives all people an equal opportunity to succeed. If you work hard and put in the effort you can make money. Unfortunately, most people these days are unmotivated and would rather take handouts.

I hope the US tries socialism for a few years so people can see how bad it is and then they come crawling back to capitalism.
