I think someone has looked at this sort of thing, like in this thread: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=66975 Basically, each console owner is more or less equal when it comes to how often they purchase games. I imagine the 360 would do a little better if there was no RRoD (should be the case, if they took until 2006 to release). Either way I can't see this comparison being "fair" (or easy), there are too many factors involved. |
i know it isn't really fair on all fronts. the purpose of doing this was just to see a different perspective.
I can't think of a senario where the assumption of the OP would have been true. I feel pretty confident in saying that Sony launched when they did because they felt 1 year was the longest lead time they could give MS; they had been betting on a 2006 launch from MS, and when 360 came out in 2005, they rushed the PS3 out the door. So it would break down like this:
Both launch in 2005: PS3 costs $1500, MS wins
MS launches in 2006: Sony would have put off the PS3 launch till 2007
MS launches in 2007 or later: Xbox 360 would be nothing like the one we know, and any predictions would be pointless
microsoft wouldn't had a chance, and they knew that. thats why they rushed 360 without any quality control.
This is what would have happened, possibly even more in favor of PS3:

Its a price war and that's where PS3 has been struggling.
I'm surprised this isn't being flamed as "insignificant" or that "we're talking about the PS3 that is against the 360 now, instead of the 360 LAST year"
Guess since the 360 is ahead in this scenario, it's all good.....

at OP
The lower PS3 attach rate can be attributed to the fact that maybe 20-25% of PS3 sales were sold to early adopters of blu-ray format who wanted a cheap blueray player and not a game console.

the thing is, the ps3 it's out performing the 360 LAST YEAR around the same time frame, and this year by more than 50% more sales.

You think the 360 at launch would have struggled with the PS3 if it launched with Gears of War?
How?
Not to mention, they'd have Halo 3 in its 2nd year...
Lastly, with an extra year they would have had time to fix RRoD / slightly improve on the hardware. A more patient Microsoft would have been an entirely different beast, far from the graph you just put up (which heavily favors the PS3).
