BUT none of those are moving hardware.....

And? whats currently moving sony hardware? oh, thats right, a slim version of the ps3 that was not intended to be launched at this time.

Sony used to launch slim versions of their consoles when either they wanted an extra hardware boost or the console was on its last legs or approaching that stage, they launched the ps3 slim early cos sales were simply not up to scratch., they launched ps2 slim to capitalise on their already strong sales position.

Both companies no doubt still have a few tricks up their sleeves this gen, but sony made the most recent move, writing off the 360 at this stage considering how well it has done thus far is clearly not advisable.

Ps3 slim launch this gen was not a luxury like it was with the ps2 slim, it was a necessity.

This. PS3 SLim maybe selling well, but I would wager a huge bet that it sells alot to already PS3 Phat existing owners. Not new users. When PS2 Slim launched me and my friends all bought it to replace our Phat PS2's. I think the numbers are quite flattering right now. And to be honest it's showing in the software sales of big exclusives. Sony has yet to have any exclusive that has pedigree beat the non pedigree new IP Gears Of War. Not even MGS4 has beat it.

If anything Sony have made the biggest desperate moves this gen. dropping the price in the first year by $200. Then releasing a Slim within 3 years?

Explain to me how PS3 software sales are almost on par with xbox 360's weekly since PS3 slims launch (yeah even this week despite Forza 3's release)?

my reason? PS3 slim is selling to NEW people

The 360 hasn't had a HUGE release apart from Forza 3. So I havent expected many 360 games to be up there. But still the 360 has them there with all the big releases to come. The ones that are there for PS3 are the ones we expected to be there with or without a Slim launch. If it was new users, you would expect games like MGS4, Uncharted 1, Resistance etc to have significant increases. Especially Uncharted 1 as new users would be loving U2 and going and getting the first. But this isn't happening. The multiplats have always been close. So I dont really know what you mean?

How is it desperation, ms break even on arcade and elite they make a profit. while each ps3 slim are sold at a loss confirmed by kaz hirai.

MS has had their arcade model at the $200 price point for over a year and the console hasnt even had a proper price drop (they just changed the names)

Xbox arcade $200, Xbox Pro $300, Xbox Elite $400
turned to...
Xbox arcade $200, Xbox Elite $300, Xbox special edition Elite $400

If they wanted so much marketshare, and so many sales like youre saying, why didnt they put the launch price 300$ and gameover? Why drop the price 100$ a year because the production cost got lower, when they could have done that?

Because they would have lost so much per console they'd have literally gone bankrupt at that point.  They would have lost like $800 per console...  It would have definitely been game over, though... for Sony

They are still losing money per console sold.  Accept this as it is a fact.  I'm sorry, bud.

Exactly. They knew they will loose money, they knew the ps 3 wont sell amazingly-like.

They wouldnt have went bankrupt after 130 million Ps2s sold,50 million PSPs sold.

Its clear that Sony only wanted to prepare for the future with Blu ray and the Cell Processor.

If they wanted to win this generation, they wouldnt have put Blu-ray and have a lower price, with no loss.

You think they are stupid? They dominated 2 generations in a row

Seriously dude, your going to lose this one.   Your trying to twist your original words.

Do I think Sony is stupid?  Apparently so, they went from a gigantic profit on the PS2 to a gigantic loss in the PS3 wiping out all of the previous ps2 profits and more.  So ya they aren't that bright.

Wiping out all the previous Ps 2 profits?Do you have a source or something?Another biased statement, you guys can talk all night, but you cant give anything real can you? PS2 and PSP were there to clear of the PS3 ''gigantic'' loss alot,Blu-Ray was also there, and also software sales.

They beat Microsoft in Japan, and Europe, atm is currently selling more in the NA too.

Its not a gigantic loss as you think, thats just how your little brain sees it.Yeah they lost alot of money, but that was to introduce the Blu Ray into gaming.

Go check the financial statements from just before the PS3 released till now.  You will see that it did indeed lose more than the PS2 made.

I know how much they lost, but i want a link that shows they lost more money than they gained from the PS2 overall.

If you dont know that the PS3 has lost all the PS2 profits and then some you are not qualified to post in this thread. http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=90820&page=1

The amazing thing is that during the PS3 lifetime the gaming and now Network division has lost more than $4.5B with the PS2 enjoying some of its most profitable years during that time as well as the PSP being profitable.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

This has evolved into one huge pissing contest. And you know what? You might all be pointing fingers at the other side, but it takes two to tango. I just wanted to say that everyone who has extensively posted in this thread is what's wrong with this site. But go on and continue blaming the other side. Good day.

PS3 Trophies

I think we will see price cuts starting in 2010 (1-2 price cuts a year) in this order: $179.99, $149.99, $129.99, $99.99

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

Desperation is wrong for a title. Xbox 360 always has the edge on the price.

Please tell me this - and you claim to be a 360 *owner* - why does MS have to drop the price of the Arcade to $99? They aren't losing money on the 360 - they posted a profit while Sony is losing money on every console sold. And MS is desperate? They were last gen when they kept cutting prices to match the PS2.

This time? Sony is the one rushing the Slim, cutting prices to within striking distance of the 360. Of course it would sell - but the big question that is way too premature to answer is - will it keep selling at this pace.

Sony has been desperate this entire gen. They showed how desperate they were when the discontinued two skus in less than a year after launch, dropped the price to $499 - and then $399 and now $299. The Arcade/Core 360 was $299 at launch - the Premium was $399. In the 4 years it's been on the market, the Core dropped just $100. Think about it - the Core never had a hard drive - and neither has the Arcade. The Elite was $499 - and has dropped $200 - but no where as fast as the PS3.

I'm not talking about 2006 or 2007 or PS2, PS1 or SNES. I'm talking about 2009 and how any time the PS3 and 360 have had a comperable price point the PS3 has outsold the 360 in any and every region. Also I never said Microsoft was deseperate but if they dropped the arcade to the same price as as a PS2- cheaper then a DS or a PSP even- yes that would be an act of desperation. At what point does Microsoft consider this option?

If PS3 closes the gap, after the 360 had a year headstart, after they made all that effort to gather all those games that made a PS2 a success, after spending all that money on advertising ($40,000,000 marketing for Halo 3 alone), after being $100 or more cheaper for the majority of it's lifetime then yes absolutely yes that would be a humiliating defeat for MS.

Profit: 1. Wii 2 Xbox 360 3 PS3

Level of humiliation: 1. Sony 2. Microsoft 3 Nintendo

Japanese Sales: 1.PS3 2. Wii. 3. 360

Level of Humiliation: 1.Microsoft 2.Nintendo 3. Sony

You do realize that Sony is still way behind the Wii in Japan, and Nintendo is far from humiliated, as their WW sales are still crushing the PS3 and 360 and they have an insurmountable lead in Japan, NA and Others.  Also Japan's console market is like 1/3 the size of the other markets so a Sony weekly lead there by a few thousand means very little, and the question remains of whether they can keep it.  Also even with Sony's sales gain they are the only ones losing money, you keep losing money like they are, and you end up not making consoles anymore, just look at Sega, so of the three, Sony is in the worst position.

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)
