Why 2D?

a 3D console pokémon that played like the handheld games would be even more awesome.

@Why wouljarrod

Nintendo would have to be bilnd not to see a reason to change the formula. A 3D console pokémon would be epic.

Think about this for a second.

How many millions of copies do you see a console version selling, especially given that it abandons local multiplayer, which is the entire point of Pokemon in the first place?

@Khuutra: The models are already done in Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon Battle Revolution. And there are more in Smash Brawl and PokePark Wii that they could be using. It will not be as hard as you set it out to be. Nintendo has experience with making open world 3d games, most of the animations are already done and it would be a huge success if they add online support.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Then answer the important question: how huge?

In this case, the ends don't justify the means, because it's completely unnecessary.

A full-fledged 3D Pokémon RPG would cost more, take longer to make and sell less than a portable counterpart would. I realize there are lots of people who want one, I'd think one was amazing, but it's just not worth it for Nintendo.

i don't know about you guys but a 3d console Pokemon game doesn't sound that fun to me..(imagines having to watch your Pokemon do those slow as molasses moves that take forever when rendered in 3d) nope no thank you too boring too long

Well we do have to remember that basically all Pokemon models are already complete..POKEMON BATTLE REVOLUTION...hell NINTENDO hasnt even updated the original 150 models from Stadium days

But then a 3D Zelda doesn't make any sense either. Why doesn't Nintendo just make DS Zelda then? Neither does any game on the Wii that's already on the DS. Why did they make Animal Crossing Wii? Why did they make Super Mario Galaxy?

3D Zeldas nowadays tend to have higher returns but hy also serve to allow them to exploroe new gameplay opportunities that the 2D games do not.

You're asking for a Pokemon exactly like the handheld ones, only more expensive, slower to make, and bound to sell fewer copies. There is no financial or artistic justification for such an endeavour.

So you're not entitled to a console Pokemon game? That's the gist of it. Nintendo most likely won't make one because it doesn't make financial sense and it might actually weaken the brand ad take away sales from the mroe lucrative handheld versions.
