Forums - Nintendo - Why is a high-def Wii needed?

A Wii HD would be a bad move, releasing just an upgraded system got them in trouble in the first place, the N64 and GCN were hardly successes, they need to disrupt and keep disrupting

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

wii HD is not needed, just like motion controls on PS3. There's no point in changing it now, way too late. Wait til next gen.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

even the SNES, was less successful than the NES, only two consoles that Nintendo has released have breached 50 million, unless Iwata is a fool, which would be contrary to everything I've seen and heard from him, why would he follow the path that led Nintendo to mediocrity, instead of the path that gave them huge success?

@68soul: If Nintendo released hardware on par with the HD consoles, they wouldn't have made nearly as much money. Looking at the financial reports of Microsoft / Sony, it's clear that selling hardware at a loss isn't the way to go.

They would like to have the console for everyone, or as you say be the "real" market leader, but only as long as they profit from it. As it is now, Nintendo has likely already made more money with the Wii than the PS2 has in its entire lifetime.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about next gen. Nintendo has made its presence known, and they will not be underestimated by third parties next gen, so the games will come. I can't imagine the next Nintendo console being weaker than current HD consoles, nor do I think that power could be considered not "good enough," even a few years from now. I mean, how great does a game need to look, really?

You're totally right about the profits made, but i still think Nintendo could have released a slightly more powerful console right from the start... not really HD, but more RAM, by example, would have been great...

When Wii was actually sold for more than its official price on the black market for nearly two years, it just proves people would have easily paid 300 euros/dollars instead of 250... so why not release a slightly more powerful console for 300? And maybe even lose a little bit on hardware for a year or two, till the costs go down and profits are made, just the same?

Anyway, what is done is done, and it won't change anymore, so everything i may say about this is useless... but i hope that their next console will be a really awesome one, in all aspects, this time... to please everyone, and be treated with respect by anyone: no more flame wars for an entire gen, please... :)

And all the best games on the Nintendo's console, too...  :)

"A beautiful drawing in 480i will stay beautiful forever...

and an ugly drawing in 1080p will stay ugly forever..."

We need it because it looks horrible on an HD TV which is growing in market share rapidly across the world..

It makes it look worse than it normally looks, it looks really good on an SD TV, but on an HD TV it doesn't because the resolution is maxed out at 480p..

Its also kind of pointless to try at this point, as most people who want those games, have a PS3 or 360 already

Did you actually read the comment? You just claimed there were 0 people who hadn't owned and HDTV back then.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Did you read the comment? He said not many people had an HD TV, when a large percentage of the population already had an HD TV in late 2006.
