Forums - Sony - PS3 Strategy is Starting to Pay Off

In US, PS3 launced at $599, is now $299...$300 off in ~3 years (highest priced model).  For comparison the 360 launched at $399 (elite launched later at $479) and is now available for $299 (again highest priced model)...$100 to $180 off in ~3.5 years.

As I don't live in Europe I won't pretend to know the price drops there, but in US, Sony's price drops have neither been small nor slow.

Highest priced model is $350 for PS3.  Even so it isn't really akin to the 60/80 GB BC models.  Actually the 160 GB still sells for $400, so that is the most expensive.

Since you are comparing the highest price to the lowest, then the 360 also halved its price in about exactly the same time frame.  Even more if you factor in the elite.

Sony did indeed release a $350 variant, I forgot about that so will concede the $350 highest price.  The 160 GB may be available some places, but most major retailers do not sell that, so sorry I'm not conceding that, particularly as SONY isn't even selling that model anymore. Compare highest prices now.

As you can see, my argument STILL holds up: one console has been on the market for about 1 year less and has had larger cuts in price, and a complete re-branding of the system.

Sony needed to make a change, and they did, I applaud them for acknowledging that, but let's not fall over ourselves calling that "strategy" when the truth is plainly staring you in the face.

It did occur to me that if by some chance, Nintendo decides to launch the wii hd at the end of 2010, (very doubtful) and Sony continues selling the PS3 well into the next generation, then hypothetically the PS3 could outsell the wii eventually.

I have no delusions of the selling power of either console, but I do believe that the PS3 (even though it is in third place currently) will have the longest staying power of the 3 current consoles because of the same reasons stated in the OP.

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

Sony launched with a lot of features and a very high price.  The machine was ahead of its time.  Sony preferred to keep the price high to limit losses, and wait to open itself to the mass market later with to price cuts.  Sony could afford to wait to cut the price, because its technology was so far ahead of its time that the risk of obsolesce was non-existent.  Plus if Sony took a larger loss and sold it at a competitive price, each price drop would no longer serve as an incentive to buy.  Also, there  is no way the expanded audience of casual gamers who may have bought the console at a lower launch price would buy enough games to make the price cut worth it for Sony's losses.

The machine has so much staying power that Sony can afford to slowly cut the price, increasing its sales in intervals and ultimately finishing ahead of its direct HD competitor.  The fact that Sony still has room to cut the price and blu-ray will only get bigger, along with its increased reliability, virtually guarantees that Sony will finish at least in second this generation.  I would give the Wii the edge over the PS3, but with its staying power, it isn't out of the question that the PS3 can close the gap at the end of 10 years.  Nintendo has built up such a large lead, that even though it lacks the staying power, I think Sony may not catch it.  But for making a HD console, Sony had the right strategy.  And Sony already had a successful standard definition console with the PS2 so making another SD console would lead to market saturation.

Okay, the PS3 is a good console, but this posts is full of fail. Sony kept the price to limit the losses... Well since the PS3 launched, the division lost 4.7 billion USD. That is quite a number. And this is limited? The losses ONLY made by the PS3 are probably around 6 billion. 4.7 reported + the profit of the PS2 and PSP for 3.5 years!

Sony MIGHT make it to 2nd place, but this won't change anything. The PS3 is a financial failure. Sure a good gaming-system, but for Sony it is a failure. Nintendo is printing money, MS is making a profit for more than 1 year now and in 1 or 1.5 years, the Xbox360 will be a profitable product overall.

There is no chance, that Sony will cover the losses made (and still making) in the future.

Believe me, if Sony had the chance to create the PS3 again, they would change their strategy.

If you look at this gen and you had to chose one loser, it would be Sony.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Is that why they dropped the price by 200 € / 33% in Europe before the PS3 even had its first holiday season?

If these are slow price drops it should be amusing to see fast price drops.

we've seen them

Microsoft dropped xbox 360's price TWICE in 1 year in 2008

One in MArch/April, then in the holidays

these weren't "discounts" they were OFFICIAL price drops

The price cuts I was talking about weren't discounts either...

BTW, how much were those MS price cuts? I forgot...

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

Last year, many of us didn't expect this $300 price tag because we knew how much it would hurt their wallets. I imagine now that they won't be able to cut the price in a long time, and it'll still be $300 by next holiday, with sales starting to slow down.

Who knows, though. It all depends on how much money they're willing to burn in order to keep the hardware selling. I wouldn't really call that strategy "paying off," though.

As for the PS3 lasting longer than the Wii, I really don't see this happening. Are we assuming the Wii successor will be out before the PS3's? I can't foresee a point in time where the PS3 sales would end up selling consistently more than the Wii's. Why do people think the Wii lacks staying power? They didn't need to cut the price until it was 3 years old...

No it did not. 4.2 billion. PS3 lost way more. 1.8 billion more and counting. And with the money lost with the Xbox and Xbox360, they build a whole new brand.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Unfortunately for Microsoft the DVD format is starting to show it's age or else another 10 years for the 360 could be conceivable as well.
