Forums - PC - id: Probably No Dedicated Servers for Rage....you can thank IW shio

id and Valve. They are perfect for each other. They can now spit roast the PC community. Then they will high five and switch. "I'm a PC...and using non-dedicated servers was my idea"

That's about as likely as me playing by somebody elses rules, which I would never do. I only play by my own rules, nobody elses...not even my own.

It's a cold day in hell when John Carmack turns his back on the people who made him who he is today.  I'm not that surprised with IW since they act like a bunch of prima donnas anyway, but ID?

It is all about the money now.  If there is a need to crack down on piracy, then you can expect things from the past to go.

I wonder how they will fare. Let me put it this way. Friken Firaxis bent their head on spore DRM when they tried to protect the game from pirates. I don't know if you've heard of them but their games have sold more than just about all Activision only games to have come out combined. They bent dwon to the customers. You honestly osme fucks like IW won't get hammered an annhilated by piracy? You sir, are wrong.

You need to get some anger management therapy dude.......

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

can someone explain a little more of the dedicated server/ not dedicated server pro and cons?

I am going to try to factor in the Pros and Cons of all sides here.

Dedicated Servers:

* Enable the community to tweak and mod, and play their creations

* Enable pirates to play their games, without getting caught

* Enable playing games without getting hit with ads.

Non-Dedicated:
* Better control over the game environment, to make sure it doesn't get out of wack, and people cheat

* Crack down on piracy, forcing only legal copy of the games to be played.

* Generate ad revenues and other streams of income, by forcing all traffic to a common community point.  This also helps players find new players.

Then I'm all for this. IW made the right decision. Piracy must be reduced.

Actually, I'd say it's more likely to get pirated in its current state- people will be far less willing to fork out for a short single player game with crippled multiplayer.

IW's new setup is not for piracy, they even admit as much. That they use steams DRM is their new anti-piracy, and is unrelated to IWnet. They honestly think IWnet is the way to go. TBH theyre really not trying to screw everyone, they just lost touch with their fanbase and are somehow hoping to get xbox like sales on PC with an Xbox like multiplayer.

As Xelloss stated, using dedicated servers is completely unrelated to piracy. It's the use of steam as a DRM that's going to reduce piracy. I think (I'm not 100% sure) that CoD4 uses SecuROM as a DRM, and it sucks major dinosaur balls both for the consumer and the developer.

How so?

A better question is how are dedicated servers related to piracy. People just know " PC devs/publishers sometimes do dumb stuff in the name of piracy" and "IW did something retarded" and automatically seem to assume they are related.

Cos it's harder to succeed logging in to a matchmaking service with a pirated copy if it's the matchmaking service that checks the validity of the code (CD key). Maybe?

We will still have Doom 2 and Quake 3 Arena... *sobs*
