Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why New Super Mario Bros. Wii WILL NOT sell 11 million in less than a year.

Why would it sell faster than WSR?

Mario Kart Wii sold 15 milllion worldwide in less than a year... and you don't think that a multiplayer sequel to the classic namesake of which that game was based on won't even do at least 11 million, let alone BREAK MK Wii's first year worldwide sales?!?

angrypoolman... you better stop huffing all that chlorine and shock!

did you not read the original post? nsmb ds did not reach 15 million in less than a year. that is a rediculous statement.

How is it a ridiculous statement?  And so what if NSMB DS didn't reach 15 million units sold WW?  You're comparing apples to oranges with that statement.

Let's compare a few things... take a look at the 2 worldwide charts below, the first one being from May 2006, the first week when NSMB DS was fully available worldwide, and the second one a year later in May 2007...

http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php?date=38865&console=&maker=&boxartz=1#

http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php?date=39215&console=&maker=&boxartz=1#

In the first chart, NSMB DS did over a million units in it's first full week available WW, with the current WW DS install base being about 19 million... then a year later in the second chart, NSMB DS was up to 9.6 million units sold WW, and the WW install base for the DS had more than DOUBLED to 42.6 million.

Now, as of this week the WW install base of the Wii is roughly 55.6 million, and NSMB Wii is being released at the height of the holiday shopping season, and a year from now we will be at that same point in the year.

So tell me... with NSMB Wii going to be available within TWO holiday seasons its first year of release, and launching on a console with THREE TIMES the install base of its predecessor's when it was first released (keeping in mind that it still sold 9.6 million units its first year on the market)... how is it a ridiculous statement to say that not only will NSMB Wii break 11 million in its first year WW sales, but that it is also highly possible it could even top MK Wii's 15 million first year sales milestone???

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Are you referring to its first year sales? Nobody here said NSMB Wii would do better, but that doesn't exclude it from 11mil. Wii Sports Resort will manage that with ease, it may even make it before the end of 09.

If you're referring to its first few months, well, obviously it has to do with releasing in November as opposed to June / July.

Thought this was a funny/troll thread (dont know why I didnt laughed though...) but who am to stop you guys...

on the other hand I do think this will sell over 11 mil before January the 1st... also I predict 1.8 million sells first week! (yes im that stupid when it comes to mario... oh and these sells are for worldwide...)

^There is no way it will sell 11mil before Jan 1st 2010, that's way too short a timespan.

This thread is about the first full years sales (so 52 weeks from launch)

Iwata feels that it'll be at least 10 million by the end of march

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I can't believe I wrote that... though I do think it might pass 11 million by 52 weeks...

I heard its gonna be marketed very well and the red spline may attract the consumer to buying with showing 4 players :/... its also mario so prepare for crazy sales coming up.

lol, WSR already shipped 7 million by the end of september.  Yeah that's barely over 2 months, and the holiday season hasn't even come yet.

By the time WSR has been out for a year it will have sold closer to 20 million than 11.  Probably 15-18 million realistically.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I'd really like to think that NSMBWii would sell that well, but the more I think about it, the more I'm not sure it can. The problem is with marketing.

To tap into the blue ocean, there's really only one thing you have to do: show people having fun. It's how the Wii _____ series does so well, and how even Wii Music broke 2.5 million in such a hostile market. It's how MK:Wii, the only game outside the Wii _____ series this gen to break 15 million sales, did it. But NSMB:Wii can't do this. Why not? Simple: it has no motion. No matter how you dress it up, you just plain cannot make button-mashing look fun. And if it doesn't look fun, the blue ocean won't bite.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

^yes it does, the helicopter suit works with shaking the wiimote

Plus you can show family gaming together and laughing as they fight for the coins or get through a level
